    James Suckling

This has intense notes of white cocoa, toffee, plums, figs, dates, mushrooms, violets and candied ginger. So pleasingly rich and caressing, full-bodied, retaining plenty of tension and energy. 56% pinot noir and 44% chardonnay. Disgorged November 2007. 5 g/L dosage. Drink now.

Light gold. Strong floral and spice notes complement ripe orange, pear and honeyed apple aromas, with a deep undercurrent of brown butter. Round, supple and nutty, showing an array of buttery orchard and pit fruit flavors and excellent depth and underlying power. Impressively long finish features an intriguing violet pastille note. There's lots going on here.

On the nose, this champagne displays its full aromatic complexity with notes of pastries, almond and hazelnut biscuit, and speculoos. As it breathes, hints of rooibos, truffle, and roasted hazelnut emerge.

    The estate

Since its creation in 1818 by Elisabeth Salmon and Nicolas-François Billecart, the Champagne Billecart-Salmon House has remained independent, preserving its expertise and commitment to quality over seven generations.

    The vineyard

The vineyard of the Billecart-Salmon House stretches from the Côte des Blancs to the Montagne de Reims, covering nearly 100 hectares. The vines are cultivated and tended using traditional methods to achieve authentic fruit and to reflect the quality of the Champagne terroir.

    The wine

The Cuvée Nicolas François Billecart was created in 1964 as a tribute to the founder of the House. This 1998 vintage champagne is crafted from a rigorous selection of 79% Grands crus and 21% Premiers crus, with partial vinification in oak barrels (15%).

    Blend

60% pinot noir from the Premiers and Grands crus of the Montagne de Reims and the Grande Vallée de la Marne, along with 40% chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs.
