Newly released this year, the inaugural iteration of Joseph Perrier's NV Brut Nature Cuvée Royale is based on the 2013 vintage, complemented by 24% reserve wines, and was disgorged in 2020. Wafting from the glass with pretty aromas of crisp yellow orchard fruit, orange oil, beeswax and white flowers, it's medium to full-bodied, pillowy and precise, with ripe but racy acids, a charming core of fruit and a delicately chalky finish. This represents a fine debut.

Based on the 2016 vintage and including 24% reserve wines, the Cuvée Royale Brut Nature NV is a blend of 62% Chardonnay, 14% Pinot Noir and 24% Pinot Meunier, aged 72 months in the cellar and finished with zero dosage. Expressive and alluring notes of apple compote, brioche, nougat, dried coconut flakes and vanilla unfurl into a lean, light-bodied palate, with buoyant acidity enveloping delicate orchard fruits. A little austere on the chalky finish, it is balanced and refreshing.

In a sign of a world of riper Champagne grapes, this familiar brand now has a zero-dosage version. It is certainly crisp and dry, but the richness of the fruit gives it a fine balance. This bottling could be kept for a few months for the tight texture to open out. So drink from 2021.

    Description

A pure and natural champagne without any added sugar

    The estate

In the depths of its 3 kilometres of underground chalk tunnels of Gallo-Roman origin, the prestigious Champagne Joseph Perrier carefully guards a know-how and respect for tradition handed down over many generations. Each plot is vinified and aged separately in order to express the identity of each terroir.

    Winemaking and ageing

The Joseph Perrier Cuvée Royale Brut Nature is a champagne which exhibits a great purity to which no dosage has been added. Based on the 2013 vintage, which was chosen for its famous freshness, 24% of the blend is made of reserve wines.

    Blend

    Chardonnay (62%)
    Pinot Meunier (24%)
    Pinot Noir (14%).

Joseph Perrier's Cuvée Royale Brut Nature: Characteristics and tasting tips

    Tasting

    Colour
The fine effervescence of this champagne is highlighted by a rather deep gold vermeil colour.

    Nose
On the nose, delicate floral fragrances dominate, particularly rose and peony. Followed by notes of spice which take over in a very pleasant and intense manner.

    Palate
Cuvée Royale Brut Nature is a direct and pure champagne that is both round and powerful. On the palate, this is showcased by a lively attack that introduces acidulous aromas of apple and pear, as well as more ripe notes of yellow fruits (nectarine), all enhanced by a hint of pepper.

    Food and wine pairing

Versatile, the Joseph Perrier Cuvée Royale Brut Nature is very pleasant as an aperitif, but can just as easily pair with a wide variety of dishes: raw fish, shellfish, Asian cuisine.

    To serve

After being chilled on ice for 20 minutes, Cuvée Royale Brut Nature should be served at an ideal temperature of between 8 and 10°C.
