The 2019 Extra-Brut Blanc de Noirs, disgorged in December 2024 with a dosage of 4.5 grams per liter, offers up an aromatic profile of crisp red apple, cranberry, cherry and pink grapefruit, with subtle hints of quince. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied, generous and textural, animated by tangy acidity. Delicately bitter phenolics lend grip, culminating in a long, chalky finish.

A fresh, minerally Champagne, with a fine, lacy mousse supporting a delicate mesh of crunchy green apple, ripe black currant, preserved lemon and toast point notes. Mouthwatering on the finish, with lingering hints of chalk and salt. Disgorged December 2024. Drink now through 2039. 2,492 cases made, 96 cases imported.

The 2019 Extra Brut Blanc de Noirs is another gorgeous wine in this range from Philipponnat. Power and energy meld together in a wine of striking presence. Most of the malolactic fermentation (70%) was blocked, which contributed palpable tension throughout. Kirsch, white flowers, mint, white pepper and chalk build into the vibrant, saline-drenched finish. This is a stellar showing. Dosage is 4.5 grams per liter. Disgorged: December 2024.

The 2019 Champagne Blanc de Noirs Extra Brut comes largely from Philipponnat’s own vineyards, including Avernay, Maureiul, and some components that go into the Clos des Goisses, Hautviller, and Aÿ, along with always a small amount of Chardonnay from the Montagne de Reims. Bottled in a new, delicate, textured, and rippled label, the wine is a pale straw color with just a hint of copper hue and has an expressive nose. The first 2019 release from the range, it showcases ripeness, intensity, strength, elegance, and freshness. Medium-bodied yet compact, it offers mouthwatering notes of orange zest, quince, salty earth, and delicate smokiness.

    Serving and Cellaring

A characterful champagne from the exceptional terroirs of Philipponnat

    The estate

Established for nearly five centuries in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, the Champagne Philipponnat House is one of the historic names of the Champagne region. Singularity, excellence, generosity, and simplicity are the values that guide this house, whose spirit has remained family-driven. Owned by the house since 1935, the legendary Clos des Goisses is one of the oldest and most prestigious clos in Champagne. This jewel is the origin of rare champagnes endowed with exceptional power.

    The vineyard

This Blanc de Noirs comes from parcels located in the Montagne de Reims, in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, Avenay, and Aÿ, all classified as Premier and Grand Crus. The vines benefit from exceptional limestone terroirs that give the wine its characteristic minerality and beautiful structure.

    The vintage

The year 2019 experienced contrasting weather, marked by a mild but insufficiently rainy winter, followed by an unstable spring with frost, rain, and coolness, slowing vine growth. However, the May rains allowed for good soil replenishment. The summer was hot and dry with two heatwaves, causing moderate water stress but also rapid ripening of the grapes. Harvest took place from September 11 to 21 under optimal conditions. The grapes were healthy, well-balanced, and very aromatic, promising an exceptional vintage.

    Winemaking and Aging

Traditional winemaking to avoid any premature oxidation. Only the first pressing is used to preserve the finesse of the juice. No malolactic fermentation on 71% of the wines. Aging on lees lasts 5 to 6 years, allowing the champagne to develop its complexity and tertiary aromas. This Extra-Brut champagne has a dosage of 4.25 g/l, preserving the purity and expression of the fruit.

    Grape Variety

    100% pinot noir.
