Description
Characteristics and Tasting Tips for L'Étonnant Monsieur Victor Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Édition TB.19 by Pierre Péters
Tasting notes
Appearance
The wine shows a deep, luminous golden hue, animated by an exceptionally fine effervescence and a persistent bead of bubbles.
Nose
The first nose opens with aromas of ripe yellow fruit and delicate acacia blossom. With aeration, the bouquet gains in complexity, revealing notes of gentle spices such as saffron, citrus zest and hazelnut.
Palate
The attack is both direct and silky, introducing a dense, full-bodied texture. Perfectly supported by controlled acidity and chalky minerality, the palate unfolds flavours of mirabelle plum, grapefruit and spice. The finish, remarkably long and subtly saline, stretches out with notes of toasted almond and candied mandarin.
Serving and cellaring
This non-vintage L'Étonnant Monsieur Victor Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Édition TB.19 can be enjoyed upon release, but it will continue to evolve favourably in the cellar and can be enjoyed until around 2030.
The Excellence of a Champagne Grand Cru from Domaine Pierre Péters
The estate
Founded in 1919 in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, the Champagne house Pierre Péters has established itself as an essential reference in the Côte des Blancs. Although the family's winemaking history began in 1858, it was Camille Péters who started marketing wines under the family name. Today, Rodolphe Péters, representing the sixth generation, runs the estate with an approach combining technical precision and respect for the environment. This independent family estate stands out for its historic specialisation in Chardonnay cuvées, producing wines of great purity that reflect the identity of their exceptional terroirs.
The vineyard
The grapes for this cuvée come exclusively from the Grand Cru-classified terroir of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, in the heart of Champagne. More precisely, they come from the finest plots of the famous lieu-dit "Les Chétillons". This Champagne vineyard, made up of old vines cultivated using massal selection, lies on soils of outcropping chalk that give the cuvées their characteristic minerality. The estate follows the principles of sustainable viticulture certified Haute Valeur Environnementale, excluding herbicides and favouring soil cultivation as well as natural grass cover.
The blend
This cuvée is the result of a complex blend based on a base harvest from 2019. It is complemented, at approximately 50%, by wines from a perpetual reserve begun in 1988. This Champagne solera, kept in a variety of containers, incorporates portions of remarkable older vintages such as 1988, 1990, 1993 and 1996, lending the wine a unique temporal depth.
Winemaking and maturation
Vinification is carried out entirely in stainless steel tanks to preserve the aromatic purity of the fruit, with systematic malolactic fermentation to soften the natural acidity. L'Étonnant Monsieur Victor Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Édition TB.19 non-vintage then benefits from extended ageing of six years on the lees in the estate's cellars. Rarely, this ageing takes place under natural cork stoppers, promoting gentle micro-oxygenation that refines the texture and enriches the aromatic palette before disgorgement.
