    Robert Parker Wine Advocate

    Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Chunky, uncomplicated, but attractive in a fleshy, delicious, medium to full-bodied style without a great deal of complexity, Cap de Mourlin’s 2010 is best drunk over the next decade.

The plum paste and blackberry coulis notes are lined with brambly tannins and backed by hints of ganache and chestnut leaf on the muscular finish. Best from 2014 through 2018.

A chewy wine with lots of tannins and juicy fruit. An ash undertone. Full body, with velvety tannins and a good finish. This needs time to soften. Try in 2016.

Dark, ruby. Pure and fresh nose, dark plum, fresh berries and herbal spices. Quite full palate with notes of freshly crushed berries, a tannic backbone and long fresh finish.

Extremely dark purple. Lots of freshly cooked blackberries, with a subtle aeration note. On the palate, thick, heavy and rich, with plenty of blackcurrant; it feels alcoholic and has a slightly Port-like character. A late harvest doesn’t always pay off. Potential rating:

Extremely dark purple with lilac and violet highlights. Plenty of freshly cooked blackberries, with a subtle airy note in the background. On the palate it’s thick, heavy, and somehow rich with lots of blackcurrant, but it then comes across as rather alcoholic, with a port-like character. A late harvest doesn’t always pay off. Potential score: (17/20). 12: Dark garnet with a lilac shimmer. The bouquet is very sweet, showing hints of elderflower syrup and ripe blueberries. Firm, dense palate, quite a powerhouse; licorice and dark-chocolate bitterness on the finish, with mealy tannins lingering on the aftertaste.

Alcoholic, upfront, broad bouquet with cocoa powder, overripe fruit, Amarone-like. Broad, opulent, full-bodied palate with lush fruit, finely sandy tannins, powerful aromatics, burly structure and a long finish. Overdone/over-extracted. 17/20 2019 - 2030

The nose is slightly cooked. Despite its richness, it finishes on rustic, tannic notes.

    Description

Characteristics and Tasting Notes for Château Cap de Mourlin 2010

    Tasting Notes

    Nose
The aromatic bouquet proves captivating and rich, opening with intense notes of well-ripened black fruits such as black cherry, blackcurrant and blueberry. This fruity core is delicately underscored by nuances of cedar, vanilla and sweet spices, reflecting masterful ageing, complemented by subtle touches of cocoa and roasted coffee.

    Palate
The attack on the palate is both powerful and velvety. The mid-palate is built on structured yet silky tannins, offering wonderful breadth. The tasting extends into a lingering, harmonious and flavourful finish, marked by an elegant mineral thread characteristic of its terroir.

    Food and Wine Pairings
This red wine pairs beautifully with fine red meats and dishes of character. It will elevate a tournedos Rossini, a fine grilled rib of beef, or slow-cooked dishes such as venison stew, beef bourguignon or lamb confit. To finish the meal, it will ideally accompany matured cheeses such as Roquefort or Saint-Nectaire, as well as intense dark chocolate desserts.

    Serving and Ageing
Boasting remarkable ageing potential, this 2010 vintage is built for extended cellaring, capable of evolving favourably until around 2030.

The Power and Elegance of a Grand Cru Classé from Saint-Émilion

    The Estate
The Château Cap de Mourlin is a historic estate whose documented origins date back to 1617. Located on the right bank of Bordeaux, this 14-hectare estate belongs to the Capdemourlin family, one of the oldest winegrowing lineages in the region, present for nearly five centuries. Today, Jacques Capdemourlin runs this Grand Cru Classé, supported by his sons Thierry and François. Part of the Vignobles Capdemourlin group, the estate skilfully combines family tradition with technical innovation to establish its wines among the leading references of its appellation.

    The Vineyard
The vineyard extends over the northern slopes of the commune of Saint-Emilion. The vines, averaging 34 years of age, are rooted in a high-quality terroir composed of clay-limestone and clay-siliceous soils. The estate places great importance on understanding its terroir through precise GPS mapping of each plot. The vineyard is managed according to sustainable farming practices, favouring the use of organic fertilisers, controlled yields and careful management of the leaf canopy to ensure healthy, perfectly ripe grapes.

    The Vintage
Regarded as one of the finest successes of its decade, this vintage benefited from particularly favourable climatic conditions on the right bank. This highly favourable weather allowed the grapes to reach optimal ripeness, resulting in a harvest of exceptional quality.

    Winemaking and Ageing
Vinification is carried out with precision in a modernised cellar, equipped with conical stainless steel vats that allow for controlled extraction. Malolactic fermentation then takes place in a dedicated temperature-controlled space. Finally, the wine undergoes careful ageing in French oak barrels, split equally between new barrels and once-used barrels, allowing its texture to be refined and its aromatic palette to gain complexity.

    Grape Varieties
This wine is a blend of Merlot (75%), Cabernet Sauvignon (15%) and Cabernet Franc (10%).
