    Robert M. Parker, Jr.

The dark purple-colored 1999 L'Evangile is a blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc. It reveals an unexpected touch of herbaceousness, which cost it a point or two in the ultimate rating. Nevertheless, the striking, evolved, hedonistic perfume of melted licorice intermixed with black raspberries, minerals, and truffles is an intellectual turn-on. This is a beautiful, medium to full-bodied L'Evangile with a sweet attack and mid-palate. It may merit a higher score, depending on its evolution. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2015.

Offers fresh herb and sweet berry, with sliced plum, too. Full-bodied, featuring silky tannins and a chewy finish. Still tannic. A little aggressive. Needs some more bottle age. -- '89/'99 Bordeaux blind retrospective (2009). Best after 2011.

Looks quite evolved. Rich and sweet and powerful. A definitely dusty overlay with some slightly rustic tannins but real integrity. This does taste like old-fashioned Pomerol! Notably less fruit-forward than modern wines. Long. Pretty impressive, though specifically for classicists. (JR)

Fully developed, the wine is medium-bodied, bright, fresh, crisp and offers red plums, truffle, mint, forest leaf, tobacco, cocoa, and herbs on the nose and palate. No decanting is needed, just pop and pour.

Deep, rich purple with violet highlights. A bouquet of black elderberry and blackberry, delicate and finely detailed, blackcurrant, restrained sweetness, fruit tea and hints of jasmine. On the palate, soft and velvety, with a silky texture, medium-bodied, a wonderful velvety, blueberry-driven core, then blueberry and candied sugar notes in an elegant, juicy finish tasting of fresh plum. A fine, slender Evangile, without much weight or power.

00: Deep, rich purple with violet highlights. A bouquet of black elderberry and blackberry; fine-boned, with black currant, a restrained sweetness, and notes of jasmine and fruit tea. The palate is soft and velvety, with a silky texture, medium-bodied, a wonderful velvety blueberry core, blueberry and rock-candy notes in an elegant, juicy finish tasting of fresh plums. An Evangile on the fine, slender side, without much drive. 17/20 2004 – 2013

The color is dark and slightly evolved. The nose is smoky, creamy, with animal notes, and beautifully oaked. The palate is smooth and caressing, with a tender body and a delicately velvety texture, finishing with a medium length. This wine is flavorful and very enjoyable.

    Description

Characteristics and tasting tips for Château l'Evangile 1999

    Tasting

    Colour
The wine displays a deep purple and dark ruby hue, with subtle brick-red highlights that reflect its graceful evolution in bottle.

    Nose
Complex and evolving, the nose releases rich aromas of black and red fruits such as blackberry and raspberry. With aeration, it reveals tertiary notes of truffle, undergrowth, mellow liquorice, cedar and cocoa, underscored by a delicate herbaceous touch that lends a pleasant freshness.

    Palate
The attack is smooth and velvety, opening onto a medium- to full-bodied palate. Carried by crisp acidity and perfectly ripe tannins softened by time, this wine offers a caressing texture that extends into a rounded, harmonious finish.

    Food and wine pairings

This red wine pairs beautifully with delicate meats such as fillet of beef with ceps or roast rack of lamb. It is also an excellent match for fine poultry or dishes that showcase black truffle and wild mushrooms.

    Serving and cellaring

For optimal enjoyment, this wine is best served at 17 to 18°C, with moderate decanting of 30 minutes to an hour depending on how open it is.

The elegance and complexity of a great Pomerol wine

    The estate

Located in the heart of the Bordeaux region, Château l'Evangile truly came into being in the early 19th century, when the estate, formerly known as Fazilleau, was renamed by its owner at the time. Acquired in 1990 by its current owners, Domaines Barons de Rothschild Lafite, this historic vineyard is now run by Juliette Couderc. A pioneer within its group, the estate has been certified organic since 2021. Château l'Evangile stands out for its ability to produce wines of great finesse that faithfully express the uniqueness of its terroir.

    The vineyard

The 22-hectare vineyard enjoys a privileged location on the south-eastern plateau of Pomerol, nestled among highly prestigious neighbours. It is distinguished by a geology that is rare for the appellation, resting on a long strip of surface gravel complemented by a mosaic of clay and sandy soils. This diversity allows for meticulous plot-by-plot management and provides ideal conditions for a nuanced ripening of the grapes.

    The vintage

1999 produced a classic vintage of fine quality. The growing season unfolded under generally favourable and balanced weather conditions. The harvest nevertheless called for great vigilance and rigorous sorting in the vineyard in order to pick the berries at optimal ripeness, thereby offsetting the variable autumn weather.

    Winemaking and ageing

The winemaking of Château l'Evangile 1999 follows the estate's tradition, with fermentation in separate vats according to plot, accompanied by pumping over and carefully controlled maceration. The wine is then aged for around 18 months in oak barrels, the vast majority of them new, refining the tannic structure and stabilising the colour.
