    James Molesworth

Ripe and bright, with a mix of plum, raspberry and blueberry fruit flavors that are well-defined, picking up anise as well as singed sandalwood and juniper notes along the way. The fruit stays persistent through the finish, with a perfumed hint filling in. Best from 2020 through 2035. 9,860 cases made, 1,250 cases imported.

An impressive nose with beautifully expressed ripe red cherry and raspberry fruits amid hints of wild herbs and subtly played spicy oak. The palate is seamless and carries pure red cherry and raspberry fruit long. Drink now.

Incense, smoke, black raspberry, thyme and garrigue come out to play. From there, the medium-bodied wine offers a sweet and tart, wild cherry profile, soft textures and an espresso- and smoke-filled, red berry finish. The wine was made blending 50% Grenache, 25% Syrah, 20% Mourvedre, and 5% Cinsault.

Deep ruby, purple reflections, broad and bright rim. Delicate tobacco background, dark berry fruit, a touch of wood, nuances of orange zest. Medium complexity, fresh black cherries, integrated tannins, mineral finish, good freshness on the back palate.

I found the 2015 Châteauneuf-du-Pape closed and reserved, with fresh notes of black cherries, cured meats, and peppery spice. Medium-bodied, fresh and nicely focused on the palate, I'd like to see more density here, but it's clean, well-made and balanced. Drink it over the coming decade.

    Description

    The finesse of a powerful, sun-drenched Châteauneuf-du-Pape

The Château's great flagship cuvée, the Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2015 from the La Nerthe estate, comes from one of the domaines that have shaped the history and reputation of Châteauneuf-Du-Pape wines in the southern Rhône Valley, with a vineyard dating back to the 12th century.

The Châteauneuf-Du-Pape 2015 cuvée from the La Nerthe estate is made from old vines surrounding the Château and embodies the perfect alchemy of several rare terroirs. It brings together La Crau, a very stony terroir well suited to hot years, and sandy and marl soils lower down the slopes. The area enjoys an exceptional microclimate, with soils that store heat during the day and release it at night. This ensures optimal ripening, while the clay retains water and spares the vines from water stress. These soils are therefore ideally suited to Grenache, bringing freshness to this red grape variety, a key component of the traditional and complex Châteauneuf-Du-Pape blend.

The Châteauneuf-Du-Pape 2015 from Domaine La Nerthe promises to be a great classic of the appellation, from a vintage rated as exceptional. Intense and sun-drenched, the nose bursts with notes of black fruit and warm spices, evolving towards smoky hints of tobacco. On the palate, this is a round, opulent and concentrated wine with a fine tannic structure built on dense, exceptionally fine grain. Powerful, perfectly balanced and long on the palate, this superb Châteauneuf-Du-Pape shows excellent ageing potential and will reveal its full complexity in the years to come.
