Château Le Pin
Characteristics and tasting tips for Château Le Pin 2020
Tasting
Colour
The wine shows a deep garnet hue with purple highlights, a sign of fine concentration and the full ripeness of the Merlot.
Nose
The nose is rich and complex, revealing aromas of ripe dark fruit such as plum and blackberry, enhanced by notes of kirsch, fig and liquorice. Floral hints of rose and lavender bring freshness, while touches of spice, black truffle and damp earth lend the wine a deeper, more mineral dimension.
Palate
On the palate, this wine is dense and enveloping, carried by ripe, silky tannins that create a velvety texture. The generous fruit is balanced by a touch of salinity that adds tension, leading to a very long finish marked by layers of minerality and spicy flavours.
Food and wine pairing
Château Le Pin 2020 is an ideal match for aged red meats and dishes enhanced with a touch of truffle, such as a tournedos or a cut of beef served with a reduced jus. It also pairs beautifully with roast game birds, herb-roasted lamb, and mature hard cheeses, whose aromatic richness echoes the depth of the wine.
Serving and cellaring
Château Le Pin 2020 has an ageing potential of several decades, allowing it to continue evolving favourably over the years, although no precise drinking window can be given today for this still very young vintage.
Other characteristics
This wine has an alcohol content of 14.5%, reflecting the warmth and sunshine that defined the 2020 vintage in Pomerol.
Château Le Pin, a rare and silky expression of Pomerol
The estate
Château Le Pin was born in 1979, when Jacques Thienpont, a member of a Belgian family of wine merchants already established in Bordeaux, acquired a small plot on the Pomerol plateau. Jacques Thienpont remains the owner of this micro-estate to this day, and its management now falls under Domaines Jacques Thienpont, a family structure created in 2021. Le Pin has established itself as one of the rarest and most sought-after wines of Bordeaux, thanks to its tiny production and distinctive, sensual and refined style.
The vineyard
The Château Le Pin vineyard covers two hectares divided into seven plots, located on the Pomerol plateau, right next to Vieux Château Certan. It rests on soils of gravel, clay and sand, enriched with iron oxides locally known as "crasse de fer", which bring this terroir close to that of its illustrious neighbours in the appellation. The vineyard is now planted exclusively with Merlot, tended with meticulous plot-by-plot care and deliberately restricted yields.
The vintage
The 2020 vintage in Pomerol was characterised by a warm, sunny climate, with episodes of moderate drought that encouraged rapid ripening of the Merlot, an inherently early-ripening grape variety. The harvest took place in three stages, on 14, 16 and 21 September, allowing picking to be tailored to the ripeness of each plot in a generous growing season.
Winemaking and ageing
For the production of Château Le Pin 2020, the Merlot is vinified in small stainless steel tanks before being transferred to barrels, where malolactic fermentation takes place, a practice that has become the estate's signature. Ageing then continues for approximately 18 months in French oak barrels, with the proportion of new oak reduced to around 70-75%, compared with 100% previously, in order to let the purity of the fruit express itself more fully.
Grape variety
Château Le Pin 2020 is made from 100% Merlot.
