Château Moulin Saint-Georges 2017

Compact in approach, well-built, firm, with perfectly ripe tannins; full of character, must be allowed to age.

The 2017 Moulin Saint-Georges, which was bottled in April 2019, has a tight and backward bouquet with brambly red fruit, briary, cedar and light peppery aromas. It does not have the “oomph” of other vintages, though that is in keeping with the growing season. The palate is medium-bodied with a very citric opening. As I remarked out of barrel, I would have liked the season to have conferred more complexity, particularly on the finish. But as such, it is a wine that keeps within its limits: easygoing, fresh but not cerebral.

Kirsch, flowers, vanilla and plum notes create the perfume. On the palate, the wine is round, soft and fruity. The tannins are gentle, allowing you to focus on the sweet, juicy finish. The blend is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc.

Deep dark ruby garnet, purple reflections, delicate edge brightening, fresh black cherry fruit, blackberries, a hint of orange zest, some nougat and precious wood. Juicy, ripe cherries, fine acidic structure, elegant, red berries, pleasant tannins, lemony finish.

The 2017 Chateau Moulin Saint Georges is a hidden gem with classic aromas and flavors as well as the charming, fruit-forward style of the vintage. Lots of black cherry and raspberry fruits, medium-bodied richness, hints of flowers, and sweet tannins all define this rock-solid Saint-Emilion that’s ideal for drinking over the coming decade.

30% of the vineyard was hit by frost. The remaining 70% yield a slender tannin with a lively, elegant finish.

The 2017 vintage showcases the elegance of hillside merlot (here facing west) and the richness of fruit that is currently hiding behind a serious, slightly defensive structure, waiting for its moment. The deep density of the tannins, matured for eighteen months in new barrels, hints at the fine distinction this cru reveals after ten years of cellaring.

Fresh, fruity, taut, indulgent, with supple, fine tannins and a long finish.

Dense garnet red. Youthful bouquet, a little closed at first, revealing itself over the minutes. Things change significantly on the palate, where the wine shows dimension, a creamy edge, and pedigree, thanks to the vibrancy of its structure. The fruit is perfectly supported, from the attack through to the finish. This Moulin Saint-Georges is crunchy, fruity, and perfectly balanced. A gourmet and convincing wine.

Dark, intense, and vibrant color. A moderately aromatic nose with pure, ripe fruit. Juicy on the attack, very flavorful, rich, and even powerful for the vintage, the wine finishes long while retaining precision in texture. This vintage brings an extra sweetness that suits its style well. It’s very good.

This has a bounce to the tannins, and again the austerity of the vintage is evident. There's no over ripeness to the fruit but there are attractive layers of soft damson and textured gooseberry and redcurrant fruits, with floral aromatics lifting everything up. 100% new oak with a low and light toast. 20% of the crop was lost to frost, with no second generation fruit used, so this vintage will see 19,000 bottles instead of a more normal 25,000.

86–88. Barrel Sample. This is a simple wine, full of attractive berry fruits backed by gentle tannins. It has lively acidity as well as a soft texture, it will be ready to drink soon.
