Description
The Subtlety of a Premier Grand Cru Classé de Saint-Émilion
The estate
Château Pavie Macquin was founded in the 19th century by Albert Macquin, the man who introduced grafted vines to France to save the country’s vineyards from destruction by phylloxera. Today, the château remains in the hands of Albert Macquin’s descendants. This Premier Grand Cru Classé de Saint-Émilion is an essential reference of the appellation and ranks among the greatest wines in the world.
The vineyard
Château Pavie Macquin covers 15 hectares on a clay-limestone terroir atop a plateau of starfish-bearing limestone rocks in Saint-Émilion on the Right Bank of Bordeaux.
The vintage
The 2019 vintage combined challenging climatic episodes. Marked by warmth tempered by occasional rain, the year 2019 yielded very ripe Merlot and fresh Cabernet grapes, whose Blend promises fine aromatic complexity.
Vinification and aging
Manual harvesting. Gravity filling of whole berries and parcel-specific vinifications in wooden and concrete vats. Aging for 16 to 20 months. Reductive aging on fine lees. First racking after 6 to 10 months of aging, the second one a year later, before bottling. Fining and filtration only if necessary.
Blend
Merlot (78%), Cabernet Franc (20%), Cabernet Sauvignon (2%).
