Aromas of minty cassis, herbs and pencil shavings introduce the 2022 Siran, a medium- to full-bodied, velvety and lively wine that’s seamless and integrated. This is an especially strong effort for this estate.

Hibiscus and iris accents are infused liberally throughout a core of mulberry and blackberry puree in this version. Black tea and sanguine hints add range on the fleshy finish, which ends with a lovely sweet cedar echo. Textbook for the AOC and the vintage. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2040. 7,000 cases made, 2,000 cases imported.

Concentrated, juicy and lifted – this really combines ripe summer berry fruit with a menthol lift and fine, grippy tannins to give a wide mouthfeel with persistence. It's not at all plush, definitely more streamlined at this point with focus and drive. Feels well worked, finessed but still with lots of flavour and polish, ending slightly salty with a liquorice tang. Detailed and easy to like.

The lead-pencil and dark-berry aromas are very persuasive here, and aromatic! Medium to full body with juicy fruit, velvety tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Creamy and pretty. Give it two or three years. Best after 2028.

The 2022 Siran is every bit as impressive in bottle as it was en primeur. Ample, rich and imposing, the 2022 has a lot to offer. A blast of dark-toned fruit, new leather, licorice and chocolate makes quite a statement. Siran is quite the extrovert. While it is not the most complex Margaux out there, its immediacy and charm are both notable.

Concentrated, rich, mouth-filling, balanced, and lifted, this is even better in the bottle than it was in the barrel, which is always a good sign of positive evolution. Blackberries and chocolate are prominent on the nose and palate. The finish lingers with layers of sweet, luscious fruit, a touch of salt, spices, and a savory edge. The blend is 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 11% Petit Verdot, and 1% Cabernet Franc. Drink from 2027–2050.

Deep dark ruby, purple reflections, brightening on the rim. Red cherries, some liquorice and orange zest, a floral touch in the underlay. Juicy, elegant, good fruit expression, good freshness, lingers long, subtle nougat on the finish. Good length, certain ageing potential, already accessible.

I loved the nose on the 2022 Château Siran, a complex, medium- to full-bodied Margaux with plenty of black cherry and plum fruit, some chocolate, violets, and floral nuances, ripe, polished tannins, and a nicely layered, balanced style on the palate. Based on 53% Merlot, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 11% Petit Verdot, raised in 35% new barrels, give bottles a few years and enjoy over the following two decades or so.

Refined bouquet with blackcurrant, olive paste and dark fine wood. On the compact palate, a soft texture, finely vibrant energy and a tight-knit tannic framework. In the focused, very firm finish, notes of plum skin, Sichuan pepper and a demanding astringency, rounded off.

Great depth, well-judged and balanced, plenty of character, crisp mint leaf, cassis, blueberry, cocoa bean, espresso; this is seriously enjoyable, with a clear tannic frame and great ageing potential. Ripe but measured, it’s one to look out for and very easy to recommend. A classic 94-point buy signal. 35% new French oak barrels, great stuff from Edouard Miailhe and winemaker Marjolaine Defrance. The label for 2022 is a tribute to Queen Elizabeth, for any royal fans out there...

    Le Figaro Vin

A dark, mysterious nose, reminiscent of Mont Blanc’s “Midnight Blue” ink, with perfumed black fruit and a hint of floral sap. On the palate, an ultra-caressing texture, still marked by floral notes. Magnificent.

So much freshness and finesse in Siran’s bouquet. It reveals appealing nuances of cherries and black berries, complemented by notes of sweet spices and a smoky touch. Slightly creamy on the attack, the wine unfolds in a linear manner. It has precise, well-integrated tannins that deliver power along with a structure ensuring freshness and length. A delicious, harmonious wine, capable of spending many years in the cellar.

The nose is well-crafted, with breadth, volume and delicacy. It reveals notes of blackberry, crushed strawberry, crushed redcurrant and, more lightly, vibrant blackberry, joined by hints of violet, licorice stick and fine touches of star anise, a subtle almost mandarin leaf nuance and a few discreet hints of vanilla. The palate is well-shaped, fresh, supple and mineral, with a lively backbone. It shows notes of pulpy blackcurrant, bright raspberry and, more lightly, small vibrant red fruits, combined with hints of racy minerality, vivid blueberry and sage, as well as a discreet touch of star anise, infusion tones and an almost mandarin leaf note, sage and roasted hazelnut, with a touch of chocolate. A beautifully guided wine, gourmand and delightfully fresh.

Beautiful dark color. Intense nose with fresh, ripe fruit. This is a Siran with a succulent, velvety, flavorful palate, recalling the estate’s best wines in terms of nuance and dark fruit. Gentle development and long finish. Blend: 53% Merlot, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Petit Verdot. Alcohol: 14%. Yield: 36 hl/ha.

Known for its unique labels, this one commemorates Queen Elizabeth II. This wine comes from an estate in the south of Margaux. It is rich, packed with black fruits and dense tannins. The wine has a licorice aroma, great fruitiness and good potential. Drink from 2029.

    Description

The finesse and balance of a Margaux red wine

    The estate

Owned by the Miailhe family for more than 160 years, Château Siran is one of the emblematic references of the Margaux appellation. Château Siran already had a reputation for the quality of its wines in the 18th century.

    The vineyard

Château Siran 2022 is a Margaux wine from a 25-hectare vineyard, superbly placed on gravel and pebble soils. The vines are 38 years old on average and are planted on hilltops made up of ancient alluvial deposits and covered with fine clayey gravel. The vineyard is managed using integrated viticulture and without chemical herbicides.

    The wine

This 2022 vintage of Château Siran has a new label, celebrating the 70th anniversary of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II.

    Winemaking and ageing

Hand-picked in small crates, the grapes are sorted on the vine and on sorting tables in the cellar. Vinification by plot. Fermentation is carried out in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats of 60 to 180hl, with pumping over and delestage depending on the batch. Maceration at 26 to 28°C for 8 to 10 days. Malolactic fermentation is done partly in barrels. The wine is aged for 12 months in French oak barrels (35% new).

    Blend

Château Siran 2022 is a blend of Merlot (53%), Cabernet Sauvignon (36%) and Petit Verdot (11%).
