The elegance and richness of a Saint-Émilion wine
The estate
Established in the 15th century, Château Trotte Vieille is an emblem of Saint-Émilion. The unusual name of Trottevieille comes from an old legend passed down through the generations. It is said that an elderly lady, eager for news from the town, would scurry over in small steps whenever a stagecoach stopped near the estate. It is from this picturesque anecdote that the château is said to have taken its name. Classified as a Premier Grand Cru, the château stands out not only for the delicacy of its wines, but also for the uniqueness of its plant heritage: this Right Bank estate of Bordeaux still preserves a precious plot of pre-phylloxera vines, miraculously spared from the wine crisis of the 19th century. Since the 1990s, the Castéja family, with Philippe Castéja at the helm, has upheld a tradition of excellence.
The vineyard
The vineyard enjoys a full south-facing exposure that promotes ideal ripening of the grapes. Located on the heights of Saint-Émilion, it is defined by a remarkable limestone terroir that gives the wines their characteristic minerality and ageing potential.
Vinification and ageing
Each plot was vinified individually to preserve the distinctive features of each terroir. The process includes a cold pre-fermentation maceration, followed by alcoholic fermentation at a moderate temperature and malolactic fermentation in vats or barrels. Ageing takes place in 100% new French oak barrels, allowing the wine to develop its complexity while maintaining its freshness.
Blend
Cabernet Franc (51%), complemented by Merlot (46%) and a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon (3%).
