    Nicolas Greinacher

Ripe red fruits, cedar, leafy gradations, pencil shavings and meaty undertones introduce the 2022 Saint-Joseph Le Berceau. Medium- to full-bodied and layered, this is a stunning Saint-Joseph that strikes the perfect balance between substance, depth and elegance. Concluding with persistence on the savory finale, the 2022 ranks among the finest Saint-Josephs of the vintage.

A step up in both concentration and complexity, the inky-hued 2022 Saint Joseph Le Berceau comes from old vines and reveals blackberries, roasted herbs, smoked meats, liquid violets, and crushed stone. It's a powerful, full-bodied Saint Joseph with remarkable purity, a deep, layered mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and one hell of a great finish. I don't think Saint Joseph gets much more impressive than this. Drink 2026-2037.

Let’s also highlight the beautiful juicy, flavorful fruit in the 2022 reds; Le Berceau is energetic and very dense, with finely defined tannins and precise length on the finish. A cuvée that will evolve beautifully.

    Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of the "Le Berceau" 2022 by Domaine Bernard Gripa

    Tasting notes

    Colour
A clear ruby hue, adorned with the violet highlights typical of its youth, characterises this wine.

    Nose
The nose expresses an aromatic bouquet dominated by red and black fruits, such as ripe cherry and blackcurrant. It then opens up to a beautiful complexity blending spicy notes of black pepper, fresh herbaceous touches, and a subtle smoky minerality.

    Palate
On the palate, this wine combines power and refinement. The structure reveals concentrated aromas of blackberry and blackcurrant enhanced by black pepper, supported by a lovely acidity and silky, elegant tannins. The finish is persistent, marked by great mineral freshness.

    Food and wine pairing

This red wine pairs wonderfully with flavourful meats such as grilled or aged beef, as well as herb-roasted lamb. It also pairs very well with roasted poultry such as duck, mushroom-based dishes, or grilled Mediterranean vegetables.

    Service and storage

With its fine structure, this 2022 vintage deserves a few years in the cellar to reveal its full complexity and can be kept until around 2032.

    The estate

Located in Mauves, Domaine Bernard Gripa was officially established in 1974 when Bernard Gripa made the bold choice to bottle his entire production at the estate. Today, his son, Fabrice Gripa, heads this family-run estate of approximately sixteen to eighteen hectares. Renowned for its equal mastery of red and white wines, the estate stands out for its sustainable farming approach, favouring manual harvesting and a pure, elegant expression of its terroirs.

    The vineyard

This wine comes from an exceptional one-hectare plot located in the historic site that gave its name to the Saint-Joseph appellation, near Tournon. Planted in 1920 on steep terraces composed of granite and gneiss, these very old vines, some of which are eighty years old, benefit from an ideal south-facing exposure. Due to the steep slope, all vineyard work and harvesting are carried out exclusively by hand.

    The vintage

The year 2022 was marked by a particularly hot and dry summer period. These weather conditions favoured optimal berry concentration and accelerated phenolic ripeness. To preserve the grapes' natural freshness and acidity, harvesting began early, on 17 August.

    Winemaking and aging

The estate's philosophy aims to limit the impact of wood in order to favour the expression of terroir. As such, this wine benefits from measured aging, with a reduced proportion of new oak barrels, generally ranging between 10% and 25% for the prestige cuvées. Fermentation protocols are specifically adapted to each year's conditions to extract the wine's substance with gentleness and elegance.
