Description
Characteristics and tasting notes of the Gevrey-Chambertin 1er cru "Petite Chapelle" 2023 from Domaine Bruno Clair
Tasting
Appearance
The colour reveals a deep, intense red hue.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet opens with generous notes of red and black fruit, evoking sweet berries. These are joined by subtle earthy and ferrous touches, highlighting the profound minerality of the terroir.
Palate
The palate offers fine power supported by a tannic structure that is both solid and remarkably supple. The particularly unctuous, rounded texture envelops a concentrated, succulent fruit core. The whole is elevated by a finish of juicy, saline freshness.
Food and wine pairings
This red wine will pair wonderfully with roasted poultry such as duck with delicate spices, tender red meats like beef fillet, or earthy dishes such as mushroom risotto. It can also offer a pleasant surprise alongside a rich fish such as roasted salmon.
Serving and cellaring
Built for ageing, this Gevrey-Chambertin 1er cru "Petite Chapelle" 2023 needs at least six years in the cellar to reveal its full potential. It can be enjoyed until around 2035.
The depth and rarity of a Premier Cru from Gevrey-Chambertin
The estate
Founded in 1979, Domaine Bruno Clair is a leading name in Burgundy, based in Marsannay-la-Côte, France. Heir to a long family tradition, Bruno Clair now runs the estate alongside his wife Isabelle and their children Édouard, Margaux and Arthur. The estate spans 27 hectares across eight villages and stands out for its highly demanding viticultural approach. Committed to a practice that respects living ecosystems, the family favours massale selection, the use of organic fertilisers, and has banned herbicides since the 1990s to bring out the best in its terroirs.
The vineyard
This Gevrey-Chambertin comes from a tiny 0.251-hectare plot acquired in 1996. Planted in 1967, these old vines enjoy a south-east exposure at around 265 metres of altitude. They thrive on soils typical of the region, made up of hard Comblanchien limestone and white oolite, with clay present at the surface. The vineyard is tended with great care, notably through Guyot-Poussard pruning adopted to preserve the vines' longevity, and the harvest is carried out entirely by hand.
The vintage
2023 offered ideal climatic conditions, allowing the grapes to reach optimal ripeness, resulting in perfectly ripe tannins and generous fruit without any heaviness. This vintage also holds historic significance for the estate, as it marks the very first separate bottling of this micro-plot, giving rise to an extremely limited production.
Winemaking and ageing
The winemaking of the Gevrey-Chambertin 1er cru "Petite Chapelle" 2023 incorporates 30 to 50% whole clusters. Maceration takes place in wooden vats over 10 to 15 days, allowing for gentle extraction. The wine then undergoes extended ageing of 18 to 20 months in oak barrels, with around 35% new wood, to refine its structure and add complexity to its aromatic palette.
