The 2023 Hermitage Blanc shows the riper, exotic, exuberant style of the vintage beautifully. Quince, apricot, blanched almonds, and honeyed orange all define the aromatics, and it holds onto a good sense of freshness on the palate with clean acidity, medium to full body, a pure, focused mouthfeel, and outstanding length. Based on 85% Marsanne and 15% Roussanne, it's a terrific example of the appellation. Drink 2026-2034.

    Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of the Hermitage Blanc 2023

    Tasting notes

    Colour
The colour reveals a deep golden-yellow hue, enhanced by bright green highlights and generous legs.

    Nose
The initial nose opens on oaky, vanilla and brioche aromas. It then evolves towards scents of white and yellow-fleshed fruits such as peach, apricot and quince, mingled with floral touches of acacia and hawthorn. A subtle mineral thread rounds off this bouquet.

    Palate
The attack is full-bodied and round, supported by lovely acidity. The palate unfolds fruity flavours accompanied by notes of almond and toasted hazelnut. The finish lingers on a persistent minerality.

    Food and wine pairing

This white wine pairs perfectly with grilled or sauced fish, shellfish such as lobster, as well as white meats in cream sauce. It also goes very well with Asian cuisine or dry goat's cheeses.

    Service and storage

For optimal enjoyment, this wine is best served between 10 and 12°C in a large glass. It can continue to age in the cellar and be enjoyed until around 2038.

The authentic expression of a terroir from the Hermitage appellation

    The estate

Located in the communes of Tain-l'Hermitage and Mercurol, in the heart of the Rhône Valley, this exceptional estate was officially founded in 1991 when Florent Viale and his father began bottling their own production. Today, Domaine du Colombier is run by Florent and David Viale, and the family estate spans approximately 18 hectares. The domaine stands out for its sustainable viticulture, meticulous manual work and very old vines.

    The vineyard

The plot dedicated to this white wine represents a tiny surface within the Hermitage appellation. Unlike the majority of the hillside dominated by granite, this specific terroir is composed of clay and limestone. The vines are venerable in age. All vineyard work and the harvest are carried out by hand, in keeping with natural balances.

    Winemaking and aging

After manual harvesting, the grapes undergo direct pressing. Alcoholic fermentation and malolactic fermentation take place simultaneously and directly in oak barrels. The wine then benefits from careful aging, allowing for a harmonious integration of aromas without masking the fruit.

    Grape variety

    Marsanne (100%).
