    James Suckling

    Stuart Pigott

Dark and rich with stacks of red fruit and licorice plus delicate notes of summer flowers and bark. Plenty of power, structure and concentration on the medium- to full-bodied palate, but for this appellation the ample tannins are remarkably fine. Wonderful interplay of beautifully ripe fruit and salty minerality at the long, exciting finish. From organically grown grapes. Matured in 30% new oak. Drinkable now, but best from 2026.

    Description

Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Pommard 1er Cru "Les Rugiens" 2022 by Domaine Faiveley

    Tasting

    Colour
The glass reveals a deep ruby red hue, underscored by a highly concentrated pigmentation.

    Nose
The aromatic bouquet opens with intense notes of dark fruits, such as blackberry and black cherry, enhanced by touches of spice and liquorice. With aeration, delicate floral scents reminiscent of violet and summer flowers mingle with subtle woody and smoky aromas.

    Palate
The attack is powerful and concentrated, offering a lovely fullness. The tannins are remarkably fine, elegant and velvety. The mid-palate and finish stand out for their superb balance between fruit ripeness and a persistent saline minerality, delivering a remarkable length.

    Food and Wine Pairing

This red wine pairs beautifully with flavourful meats such as beef fillet in pastry, duck breast with cherries, or braised lamb. It also complements poultry in sauce, terrines, as well as mature cheeses such as Époisses, Comté or Langres.

    Service and Storage

For an optimal tasting experience of this great wine, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 14 and 16°C, taking care to decant it between thirty minutes and two hours before serving. This wine can be enjoyed from around 2026 onwards and has an ageing potential spanning several decades.

The Elegance and Structure of a Pommard 1er Cru Red Wine

    The Estate

Founded in 1825 by Pierre Faiveley, Domaine Faiveley is a true institution in Burgundy. Today led by Erwan Faiveley, representing the seventh generation, and his sister Eve, the estate oversees a vast 127-hectare vineyard spread across the region's most prestigious terroirs. The estate stands out for its commitment to biodiversity and its transition towards organic viticulture, combining respect for family tradition with cutting-edge technical modernisation under the guidance of cellar master Jérôme Flous.

    The Vineyard

The half-hectare plot from which this wine originates lies in the upper section of the renowned "Les Rugiens-Hauts" climat, within the Pommard appellation. Acquired in 2007, these vines were planted in 1953 and benefit from an ideal east and southeast exposure. They thrive at an altitude ranging between 260 and 320 metres, on marl soils rich in iron and scree, which give the earth its characteristic reddish colour. The vineyard is farmed according to organic practices, with hand-picked harvests and meticulous canopy management.

    The Vintage

The year 2022 began with a mild, dry winter and autumn, followed by a spring and early summer marked by intense heat and significant water stress. Fortunately, timely rainfall between mid-June and early July helped rebalance the growth cycle. The harvest, which took place from late August to mid-September, revealed grapes of exceptional health, with lovely ripeness and excellent acid balance.

    Winemaking and Aging

Winemaking favours a gentle, natural extraction to preserve the elegance of the tannins and the aromatic expression of the fruit. The wine is then aged for fourteen months in French oak barrels, with 30% new oak, lending subtle toasted notes without masking the identity of the terroir.

    Grape Variety

This wine is made exclusively from Pinot Noir.
