Description
Characteristics and tasting tips for Cuvée Tradition 2022 from Domaine Grand
Tasting
Appearance
The colour is golden, at times tinged with amber highlights, the hallmark of the oxidative ageing characteristic of the Jura's veil-aged wines.
Nose
The nose reveals notes of dried fruit such as walnut, hazelnut and almond, together with spicy nuances reminiscent of curry and ginger, and touches of citrus that add freshness, all underscored by a mineral and saline dimension.
Palate
On the palate, the fruity attack carried by the Chardonnay gives way to a rich, complex texture, where hints of hazelnut and spice unfold with vivacity, leading to a long, mineral and slightly saline finish, lifted by a touch of bitterness that gives it character.
Food and wine pairing
Cuvée Tradition 2022 pairs beautifully with aged Comté, whose dried fruit aromas echo those of the wine, as well as poultry in a cream and mushroom sauce or freshwater fish such as pike. Soft cheeses complete this range of pairings harmoniously.
A Côtes du Jura white wine shaped by the tradition of the veil
The estate
Founded in 1970, when the Grand family devoted themselves fully to winegrowing, Domaine Grand draws on roots in a Jura winemaking tradition dating back to the 17th century. Based in Passenans, in the heart of the Jura, the estate is now run by Nathalie Morin and Emmanuel Grand, who refocused the property on 10 hectares in 2015 and led it towards organic farming, certified since 2021. Named “Winegrowers of the Year” by the Guide Hachette des Vins in 2020, Domaine Grand cultivates Chardonnay, Savagnin, Trousseau and Pinot Noir across the terroirs of Côtes du Jura, Arbois and Château-Chalon.
The vineyard
Cuvée Tradition comes from plots in the Côtes du Jura appellation around Passenans, where Chardonnay thrives on red marl soils while Savagnin finds its preferred terroir on grey marls. Farmed organically with certification since 2021, these vines benefit from close attention to soil life, in keeping with the estate's cherished plot-by-plot approach.
Winemaking and ageing
The two grape varieties are vinified separately: the Chardonnay ferments and is then aged using a topped-up (ouillé) method to preserve its freshness and fruit, while the Savagnin is aged under a veil of yeast in old barrels, in the Jura's oxidative tradition. After several years of ageing for each, the two wines are blended a few weeks before bottling, giving rise to Cuvée Tradition 2022, made from organically grown grapes cultivated by the estate.
Grape varieties
Cuvée Tradition 2022 is a blend of Chardonnay and Savagnin, two emblematic grape varieties of the Jura vineyard.
