The Authentic Expression of Syrah in the Rhône Valley by E. Guigal
The Estate
Founded in 1946 in Ampuis by Étienne Guigal, the E. Guigal House is a true institution of the Rhône Valley. Now led by the third generation, with Philippe Guigal as general manager and his wife Eve in charge of management, supported by Marcel Guigal, this family-run structure perpetuates a heritage of excellence. Both a wine estate and a trading house, this internationally renowned brand cultivates a vineyard of exceptional scale. It stands out for its deep attachment to Rhône terroirs and its remarkable mastery of extended ageing.
The Vineyard
The vines dedicated to this Crozes-Hermitage cuvée thrive on terroirs of alluvial origin. The soils are made up of clay-limestone loamy earth as well as sandy-gravelly areas rich in rolled pebbles, ensuring excellent drainage. Averaging around 35 years old, the vines are carefully monitored with controlled yields of around 40 hl/ha, thus guaranteeing a fine concentration of the berries.
The Vintage
The year 2022 stands out as a warm and generous vintage in the northern region. Weather conditions favoured excellent ripeness of the berries, delivering rich material and ripe tannins. Despite these high summer temperatures, the cool nights helped preserve an ideal balance and beautiful vivacity.
Vinification and Ageing
The making of the Crozes-Hermitage 2022 is based on a highly meticulous traditional vinification. After destemming and crushing, fermentations take place in vats with strict temperature control. Long macerations are favoured, with a vatting time reaching three weeks in order to extract colour and structure. Finally, the wine benefits from an extended ageing of 24 months in oak barrels to soften its tannins.
