A terrific success given the challenges of the vintage, Chapoutier's 2021 Chateauneuf du Pape Barbe Rac—all Grenache, made without any oak—showcases cherries and raspberries, a delicate, silky feel and decent length and concentration. Fruit-forward and elegant, it's definitely one 2021 not to turn up your nose at—just don't expect to age it for more than about a decade.

A beautiful, harmonious red, salty and rich, with saucisson and grilled herbs infusing red currant and red brick dust on a round, mouthfilling palate. Warm mocha and lavender add to the complexity, with the stunning texture the star of the show. Offers leafy elegance and a refreshing kick of menthol on the finish. Excellent. Drink now through 2038. 10 cases imported.

A remarkable 2021 Chateauneuf with fantastic balance between creamy richness and mineral freshness that enables it to feel way lighter than this full-bodied wine really is. Deep red fruit and subtle spice fill out the ample and well-structured palate, the fine tannins building very nicely at the long, complete finish. From the extreme west of Chateauneuf, where it grows on the galets-cobblestone soil. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

Intense garrigue, licorice, black cherry and dried violets introduce the complex 2021 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Barbe-Rac. Full-bodied and fleshy, its 14.5% alcohol is neatly balanced by refreshing acidity. Despite the apparent richness and generosity, the 2021 is a remarkably tender Barbe-Rac, exuding ample elegance. The finish is long and spicy.

All Grenache that was 90% destemmed and raised mainly in concrete, beautiful wild strawberries, hints of framboise, loamy soil, spice, and subtle floral notes all define the aromatics of the 2021 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Barbe Rac, and it hits the palate with medium-bodied richness, a supple, layered, elegant mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and outstanding length.

    The estate

Established since 1808 in Tain-L’Hermitage, the M. Chapoutier House today embodies the elite of the greatest names in the wines of the Rhône Valley.

Winemaker and merchant, Michel Chapoutier has managed over the vintages to lead this family business to the top. The wines of Maison Chapoutier are recognized for their refinement and high quality by the finest connoisseurs beyond borders. A man of many hats, Michel Chapoutier holds the world record for 100/100 scores awarded by American critic Robert Parker. Mathilde, Michel Chapoutier's daughter, has taken up the torch of this iconic house, overseeing a vineyard of over 350 hectares across the most prestigious appellations of the northern and southern Rhône Valley.

    The vineyard

The Barbe Rac cuvée from M. Chapoutier is a Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine resulting from a rigorous parcel selection. Averaging 90 years old, the vines are planted on a plot with complex geology, composed on the surface of rolled pebbles from the former bed of the Rhône.

    The vintage

2021 is a vintage whose contrasting conditions between the northern and southern Rhône Valley have revealed the nuances and richness of each of these great terroirs. This vintage captivates with its finesse and aromatic palette harmoniously blending complexity and elegance.
