The 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Croix de Bois is totally sexy. Melted licorice, ripe black plum, blackberry, crushed violets and smoky subtleties are all dialed up. Loaded with jammy red and black fruit concentration and built around robust tannins, the 2022 is a dense, generous Croix de Bois at eye level with the gorgeous 2020. Outstanding.

Kirsch liqueur, ground pepper, dried flowers, and loamy earth notes all emerge from the 2022 Châteauneuf Du Pape Croix De Bois, another brilliant Grenache from this team that has so much to love. Full-bodied, concentrated, broad, and expansive, it has the sunny style of the vintage while staying flawlessly balanced, concentrated, rich, and powerful. This cuvée comes from the Crois de Bois lieu-dit and saw the same 70% destemming and aging all in concrete as the Barbe Rac release. It, too, will keep for 10-15 years with ease.

An elegant, glossy style, with a lighter, less-extracted profile to its red currant, dried strawberry and bright cherry notes, underscored by warm soil, soy sauce and garrigue, plus warm spice and pepper details. Streams through with fresh, deftly polished tannins and chalky mineral elements lining the long, complex finish. Beguiling, perfumed and complex. Drink now through 2038. 10 cases imported.

    Description

A complex and silky red wine from Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    The estate

Established since 1808 in Tain-L’Hermitage, the House of M. Chapoutier today embodies the elite of the greatest names in Rhône Valley wines.

Vineyard owner and merchant, Michel Chapoutier has managed over the vintages to lead this family business to the top. The wines of Maison Chapoutier are recognized for their refinement and high quality by the most discerning connoisseurs beyond borders. A man of many hats, Michel Chapoutier holds the world record for 100/100 scores awarded by American critic Robert Parker. Mathilde, Michel Chapoutier's daughter, has taken up the torch of this iconic house, overseeing a vineyard of over 350 hectares across the most prestigious appellations of the northern and southern Rhône Valley.

    The vineyard

A reference among the wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, this Croix de Bois 2022 from M. Chapoutier is made from vineyards planted on soils composed of rolled quartzite pebbles and sandy red clay.

    The vintage

The year 2022 in the Rhône Valley is marked by a particularly hot and dry summer, offset by salvific rains as the harvest approached. Despite these extreme conditions, this brighter than solar vintage seduces with its balance, its aromatic brilliance, and its complexity, suggesting an exceptional aging potential.
