Surprisingly full-bodied for L'Ermite, richer in body than a classic vintage. This is precise and fine, with notes of lemon verbena and struck flint. Reductive now, so give it time, but there's great drive and focus. Unusually high acidity (3.2-3.3 pH) which is rare for Marsanne. From east-facing vineyards situated around the chapel, which are the only white vineyards on the granitic part of Hermitage, other than Dard & Ribo's plots.

The 2022 Ermitage Blanc L'Ermite impresses with hauntingly intense notes of linden blossom, chamomile, ripe melon and quince alongside delicate jasmine elements. Full-bodied and concentrated, the 2022 delivers a totally sapid palate with spot-on balance. The elongated, expansive finale confirms its transformation into something truly spectacular since I last tasted it. Simply put, the 2022 is a masterpiece of a white Hermitage. Kudos to Clément Bärtschi and the entire team at Chapoutier.

Energetic and vibrant despite its breadth and weight, with dried garrigue, bitter mineral and white tea tannins supporting earthy mirabelle plum and star fruit. Densely packed, with finely beaded acidity coursing through. Notes of honeysuckle and fresh-cut herbs bring palpable freshness to the lush finish, marked by sharp flintiness, plus details of salty piecrust and smoke. Boasts a long life ahead. Drink now through 2038. 3 cases imported.

    The estate

Established in Tain-L’Hermitage since 1808, the House of M. Chapoutier is now recognized among the most prestigious names in the Rhône Valley.

Michel Chapoutier, winemaker and négociant, has elevated this family house to the pinnacle of excellence over the vintages. Wines bearing the Chapoutier signature are praised for their elegance and quality by connoisseurs around the world. A true jack-of-all-trades, Michel Chapoutier holds the highest number of perfect scores (100/100) awarded by critic Robert Parker. The vineyard

L’Ermite blanc comes from vines located at the top of the Hermitage hill, around the chapel of the lieu-dit L’Ermite. This exceptional terroir is distinguished by its poor granitic soils, which impart great singularity to this vin d'Ermitage.
