The sweetly fruited, downright sexy 2014 Ermitage Le Méal offers plenty of raspberry jam, toasted bread, and floral notes in a ripe, expansive, mouth-filling style. Like all the wines here, the tannin quality is incredible. You can drink this today with ample pleasure, but it will keep for two decades.

    James Molesworth

Fleshy and broad in feel, with mulberry and blackberry fruit showing a steeped edge, accented by hints of sage, anise and bramble. Reveals a light loamy echo through the finish, which will need some time to unwind fully. Best from 2018 through 2031. 12 cases imported.

Cask sample. Rich soils and expression. Solid, rich and hugely friendly. Exuberant. But denser than the Greffieux. (JR)

    Bettane+Desseauve

Tasted before bottling. Very ripe red fruit, slightly jammy yet fresh; a silky palate where the sunny character of the slope clearly comes through, creamy texture, a slightly saline finish for even more flavor, and a cocoa-tinged finish.

    La RVF

Woody, bacon-like and smoky nose: the oak dominates a little at first. The juice stays true, with a sappy texture, no excess, concentrated in finesse. The tannins are slightly out of step, but the juice shows beautiful length.

    Description

The elegance and harmony of an Ermitage red wine

    The property

Established since 1808 in Tain-L'Hermitage, the M. Chapoutier House today embodies the elite of the greatest names in Rhône Valley wines.

As a winemaker and merchant, Michel Chapoutier has managed over the vintages to lead this family business to the top. The wines of the Chapoutier House are recognized for their refinement and high quality by the finest connoisseurs beyond borders. A man of many hats, Michel Chapoutier holds the world record for 100/100 scores awarded by American critic Robert Parker. Mathilde, Michel Chapoutier's daughter, has taken up the torch of this iconic house, overseeing a vineyard of over 350 hectares across the most prestigious appellations of the northern and southern Rhône Valley.

    The vineyard

Parcel selection, Le Méal 2014 from M. Chapoutier is an Ermitage wine made from grapes from the eponymous hillside. The soil of these high terraces is made up of rolled pebbles and clays. These old vines, over 50 years old on average, are known for their low yield, producing high-quality wines.

    Vinification and aging

Manual harvest at full maturity. 100% destemmed, the grapes are vinified in small cement vats. Maceration at high temperature to promote optimal extraction and obtain soft and silky tannins, guarantees of a significant aging potential. This parcel selection is made exclusively from free-run wine. The aging of 14 to 18 months is carried out in new barrels or in a wine barrel. The clarification is done naturally.

    Blend

Le Méal 2014 from M. Chapoutier is a 100% syrah.
