    Wine Spectator

    James Molesworth

Lush and exotic, with creamed mango, peach and papaya notes that are nonetheless fresh in feel, glistening with verbena, chamomile and honeysuckle accents and backed by a mouthwatering swath of salted butter on the finish. Drink now through 2035. 38 cases imported.

    Decanter

A rich and precious wine that speaks of glistening golden, ripe fruit infused with oriental spice. The opulence persists on the palate, revealing creamy nut butter, blanched almonds and cumin, with the smallest touch of tomato leaf on the finish. A dense and weighty mouthfeel leaves you in no doubt that you've tasted something truly special.

    James Suckling

An expansive, lively, textured, driven and harmonious Ermitage. The nose exhibits notes of caramelized apples, wild herbs, preserved lemons and loads of exotic spices. It’s medium-bodied yet it has so much volume and dimension. The concentrated, flavorful core of spices and subtle fruit at the center expands harmoniously on the palate. A gentle structure brings plenty of finesse and delicacy, with a long, focused, dense finish. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink or hold.

    Vinous

    Josh Raynolds

Shimmering gold. Powerful, mineral-accented poached pear and peach nectar scents, along with suggestions of honey, brown butter and pungent flowers. Weighty yet energetic on the palate, offering alluringly sweet orchard and pit fruit liqueur flavors that are given spine by a core of juicy acidity. Rich yet sharply delineated, showing excellent finishing clarity, velvety texture and strong, mineral-driven persistence.

    La RVF

Time is doing it good, and this cuvée from a very sunny, warm vintage is regaining a lovely breath of freshness. We are therefore raising its score and revising our assessment. The palate is limpid—indeed warm—but carried by noble bitters on the finish.

    Description

The balance and indulgence of a white Ermitage wine

    The estate

Established since 1808 in Tain-L'Hermitage, the M. Chapoutier House today embodies the elite of the greatest names in the wines of the Rhône Valley.

Vine grower and merchant, Michel Chapoutier has managed over the vintages to lead this family business to the top. The wines of Maison Chapoutier are recognized for their refinement and high quality by the finest connoisseurs beyond borders. A man of many hats, Michel Chapoutier holds the world record for 100/100 scores awarded by American critic Robert Parker. Mathilde, Michel Chapoutier's daughter, has taken up the torch of this iconic house, overseeing a vineyard of over 350 hectares across the most prestigious appellations of the northern and southern Rhône Valley.

    The vineyard

The Méal 2018 white from M. Chapoutier is an Ermitage wine made from grapes from the eponymous hillside. Averaging over 50 years old, the vines are planted on a soil of fluvio-glacial alluvium, made up of numerous pebbles. These old vines are recognized for their low yields, producing high-quality wines.

    Vinification and aging

Manual harvest at full maturity. Pressing followed by a settling of the musts in the cold for about 24 to 48 hours. The vinification is carried out approximately 50% in demi-muids and 50% in vats. This wine benefits from an aging of 10 to 12 months, accompanied by regular stirring.

Characteristics and tasting advice for the Le Méal 2018 cuvée from M. Chapoutier

    Tasting

Notes of reduction characteristic of Ermitage wines in their youth give way to a precise, mineral and tense palate. Balanced and persistent, the palate is seduced by its notes of celery, matchstick tips and toasted sesame.
