    Vinous

    Nicolas Greinacher

Like the La Mordorée from the same vintage, the 2022 Côte-Rôtie Les Bécasses has developed pronounced leather aromas since my barrel tasting last year, indicating the presence of Brettanomyces. Lacking charm and elegance, the 2022 finishes with an overly drying, astringent finish.

    Description

Characteristics and Tasting Tips for the Les Bécasses 2022 Cuvée by M. Chapoutier

    Tasting

    Color
Beautiful color with a reddish-purple hue.

    Nose
Complex and expressive, the nose reveals aromas of raspberry and a slight hint of violet. The spices predominate, accompanied by notes of black olive, tapenade and rosemary.

    Palate
Broad and deep, the palate offers a generous structure with firm tannins. The finish is distinguished by woody, spicy and vanilla notes.

    Service and Cellaring
To fully appreciate Les Bécasses 2022, serve it between 16 and 18 °C after slight aeration. This wine can be cellared until around 2037.

The structure and refinement of a red wine from Vallée du Rhône

    The Estate
Founded in 1808, the Maison M. Chapoutier is a pillar of the Vallée du Rhône, with a 360-hectare vineyard. Led by Michel Chapoutier, a pioneer of biodynamics since the 1980s, and his daughter Mathilde, the estate stands out for its innovative practices, such as single-vineyard vinification and Braille labels. M. Chapoutier is renowned for its exceptional wines, often rated 100/100 by Robert Parker, and was ranked among the world’s top 50 oenotourism destinations in 2024.

    The Vineyard

Les Bécasses de M. Chapoutier is a Côte-Rôtie wine sourced from vineyards planted on hillsides with chlorite and iron-rich mica schist soils, with loess depressions. The Côte Brune area features schist soils with loamy zones rich in glacial pebbles, while the Côte Blonde is characterized by lighter soils with siliceous and calcareous deposits from the glacial era.

    Vinification and Aging
The grapes are entirely hand-harvested at optimum ripeness. After destemming, fermentation takes place in concrete vats with daily punch-downs to extract color and tannins. The maceration lasts 3 to 4 weeks depending on the vintage. Aging takes place over 14 to 16 months in barrels (80 %) and stainless steel tanks (20 %).

    Grape Variety
    Syrah (100 %).
