A powerful and elegant Montepulciano d'Abruzzo from the Italian estate Masciarelli

    The estate

Founded in 1981 by Gianni Masciarelli, the Masciarelli estate represents one of the finest Italian winemaking success stories. Established in San Martino sulla Marrucina in the province of Chieti, the estate now spans over 300 hectares of vineyards spread across the four provinces of Abruzzo. Since 2008, Marina Cvetic Masciarelli has been running the property with her three children, carrying on the philosophy of continuous innovation initiated by Gianni. The estate stands out for its commitment to quality and sustainability, with EMAS and ISO 14001:2015 certifications.

    The vineyard

This Montepulciano d'Abruzzo comes from a historic vineyard in San Martino sulla Marrucina, established in 1930. Located on steep slopes at an altitude of 450 meters, this terroir is characterized by soils composed of limestone, clay and gravel. The vines, aged 30 to 35 years at the time of the 2005 vintage, are trained using the Guyot system with a planting density of 9,000 vines per hectare. Yields are deliberately kept low to promote aromatic concentration.

    The vintage

The 2005 vintage in Abruzzo produced wines of remarkable concentration and power. The climatic conditions allowed the Montepulciano to reach optimal ripeness, developing rich and complex flavors. The harvest took place in late October and early November, reflecting the late ripening characteristic of the grape variety.

    Winemaking and aging

After manual harvesting, the grapes for this 2005 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo were destemmed and pressed. Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks at 28 to 30°C, with an extended maceration of 10 to 15 days allowing optimal extraction of tannins and aromatic compounds. The wine was then aged for approximately 12 months in new French oak barrels, promoting the integration of oak aromas and the development of complexity. Bottle aging followed after bottling.
