An Exceptional Pinot Noir from the Heart of Patagonia by Matias Riccitelli

    The Estate

Founded in 2009 by its current owner Matías Riccitelli, the eponymous bodega quickly established itself as an essential name in Argentine winemaking. Initially based in Las Compuertas in the Mendoza region, this Argentine estate expanded southward in 2015 to explore the extreme terroirs of Patagonia. Driven by a strong agroecological sensibility, Matías Riccitelli is dedicated to showcasing historic vineyards and old ungrafted vines, thereby producing distinctive wines that faithfully reflect the uniqueness of their native landscapes.

    The Vineyard

The grapes come from the Rio Negro valley, in Patagonia. This unique terroir, located around the town of Luis Beltrán, is characterised by alluvial soils of loamy and limestone composition. The vines, planted in the late 1960s, are notably ungrafted, meaning they grow on their own rootstock. The vineyard is managed according to strict agroecological principles, with no use of herbicides or systemic products, helping to preserve the local ecosystem and maintain moderate yields.

    Winemaking and Ageing

The grapes for the Old Vines from Patagonia Pinot Noir 2024 are harvested by hand during the first week of March, in small 20 kg crates to preserve the integrity of the bunches. After careful manual sorting, the winemaking process incorporates 25% whole clusters, with the remainder destemmed. Fermentation is initiated using indigenous yeasts in small French oak vats, with temperatures controlled between 24 and 26°C and a gentle extraction process. Finally, the wine undergoes 12 months of ageing in used French oak barrels.
