Montepulciano : Key Points

Montepulciano is a red grape variety generally cultivated in central Italy, and most notably in the eastern regions of Abruzzo, Marche and Molise.

A medium vigour varietal, often cultivated in the gobelet method in Abbruzzo, but also over pergolas in the provinces of Chieti and Pescara, it develops best in hot climates. The montepulciano grape gives a fruity and sweet expression to wines and provides their roundness and colour. It is one of the most famous grape varieties in the production of Italian wines.

Montepulciano has often been confused with the sangiovese grape, but DNA analysis has shown their differences.

Though this grape certainly originates from Italy, it is not actually cultivated in Montepulciano, a small village in southern Tuscany. In fact, the famous Vino Nobile wines of Montepulciano are not produced from montepulciano (which is not allowed to be grown in this appellation), but from sangiovese.
