Wine Spectator

Bruce Sanderson

A spicy version, offering black cherry, blackberry, earth and iron notes. Dense yet offset by vivid acidity, this red delivers balance, with its broad tannins beautifully integrated. Fresh and persistent in the end. Best from 2027 through 2043. 805 cases made, 100 cases imported.

This prototypical Beaune combines the commune's red fruit charm with savory and rooty complexity plus just a hint of smoke. All of this is wrapped around a compact core of fine tannins. Very long, spicy finish. From 70-year-old vines on the lower section of Beaune's vineyards. From organically grown grapes.

Description

Characteristics and tasting tips for the Beaune "Vieilles Vignes" 2022 from Champy

Tasting

Colour
The wine displays a deep garnet hue.

Nose
The nose is intense, with toasty reductive notes and smoky, empyreumatic nuances. It also reveals delicate aromas of Gariguette and wild strawberries.

Palate
The palate is rich, fleshy and very fruity, resting on a well-structured tannic backbone. This wine offers excellent ageing potential while already being a pleasure to drink now.

Food and wine pairings
This Beaune "Vieilles Vignes" 2022 is a perfect match for fine charcuterie. It also pairs well with meat dishes in sauce, such as bœuf bourguignon, duck breast with a red wine lees sauce or Dijon-style rabbit leg. It is equally superb with a cheese platter.

Serving and cellaring
The Beaune "Vieilles Vignes" 2022 is best served at a temperature of between 15 and 16°C. This wine can be cellared and enjoyed until around 2032.

The finesse and structure of a Beaune wine from old vines

The estate
Founded in 1720 by the cooper Edme Champy, Maison Champy is the oldest négociant house in Burgundy. Based in Beaune, it manages 21 hectares of vines and combines estate-grown production with a négociant business covering prestigious appellations. The house has been run by Dimitri Bazas since 2014 and has belonged to the AdVini group since 2016.

The vineyard
This "Vieilles Vignes" 2022 comes from a selection of vines planted between 1947 and 1949 in the Beaune appellation, the wine capital of Burgundy and the largest village appellation in the Côte d'Or. The vines thrive on the clay-limestone soils typical of this part of Burgundy.

The vintage
Winter 2022 in Burgundy was milder and drier than average. The weather in early September brought generosity and quality to the harvested grapes.

Winemaking and ageing
The Beaune "Vieilles Vignes" 2022 undergoes cold maceration followed by fermentation with native yeasts. Maceration lasts 3 weeks. The wine is then aged for 12 months in 228-litre Burgundy barrels, 20% of which are new oak.

Grape variety
100% Pinot Noir.
