A leading name in Pauillac, Château Pontet-Canet embodies boldness and innovation. This Fifth Growth owes its reputation as much to its history as to its pioneering role in biodynamics, initiated in 2004 by Alfred Tesseron and Jean-Michel Comme.
A legacy shaped by three families
Founded in the 18th century by Jean-François de Pontet, the estate took its name after acquiring plots in the Canet area. Classified in 1855, it was later developed by the Cruse family before being acquired in 1975 by Guy Tesseron. Since 1994, Alfred Tesseron has driven a new dynamic, now continued by his daughter Justine. Unusually for the Médoc, only three families have shaped its history.
The biodynamic revolution
In the early 2000s, Pontet-Canet made a decisive shift by adopting biodynamic practices, challenging Bordeaux’s conventional methods. Initial trials in 2004 proved successful and led to the full conversion of the vineyard. Soil work without chemical inputs, the use of draft horses, and a holistic approach to the ecosystem have made the estate a benchmark. Certified organic and biodynamic (Ecocert, Biodyvin, Demeter), it now inspires many other classified growths. The 2009 and 2010 vintages, both rated 100/100 by Parker, confirmed this visionary approach.
An exceptional terroir in Pauillac
Covering 81 hectares of vines, the vineyard rests on Garonne gravel soils that promote excellent drainage and optimal ripening. The grape variety mix combines predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, from vines averaging 40 years of age.
Precision winemaking
Hand harvesting, rigorous sorting and parcel-by-parcel vinification in concrete vats ensure the purest expression of the fruit. Ageing, lasting around 16 months, combines oak barrels and amphorae (dolia), with reduced use of new oak to preserve the terroir’s identity.
The Pontet-Canet style
The wines stand out for their controlled power, density and freshness. Aromas of ripe black fruits are intertwined with floral, spicy and smoky notes. On the palate, they are full-bodied and velvety, leading to a long, saline and mineral finish.
Vintage after vintage, Château Pontet-Canet stands as one of the most distinctive and inspiring signatures of Bordeaux’s Left Bank.
