    Description

Characteristics and Tasting Notes of Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia 2024 from Tenuta dell'Ornellaia

    Tasting Notes

    Appearance
The 2024 vintage reveals a deep colour, enhanced by delicate purple hues.

    Nose
Particularly expressive and generous, the bouquet opens with aromas of red fruits such as redcurrant and raspberry, mingled with hints of black cherry. It then develops floral touches of dried lavender, herbaceous notes of sage, along with spicy, toasted and balsamic accents reminiscent of eucalyptus and clove.

    Palate
This bright and charming wine offers a full attack and lovely vibrancy. Its well-defined freshness supports a harmonious and muscular structure. The tannins prove firm, grainy and velvety all at once, leading to a savoury, tight finish with long fruit persistence.

    Food and Wine Pairing

This cuvée pairs wonderfully with roasted or grilled red meats, such as a rib of beef or a herb-crusted rack of lamb. It will also enhance Mediterranean-style stews, game dishes accompanied by reduced sauces, as well as long-aged hard cheeses.

    Serving and Cellaring

With its fine structure, Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia 2024 is a wine that can be enjoyed in its youth, yet also holds real ageing potential, allowing it to be cellared and enjoyed until around 2034.

A generous, beautifully precise great red wine from Tuscany

    The Estate

Founded in 1981 by Marchese Lodovico Antinori, Tenuta dell'Ornellaia is located on the coast of Tuscany. This roughly 97-hectare estate quickly established itself as an essential reference among great Bordeaux-inspired wines in Italy. Today, the estate is wholly owned by the Frescobaldi family, who continue to pursue excellence through integrated and sustainable viticulture. A true prestige name with international renown, the estate skilfully combines the maritime influence of its terroir with the nobility of its grape varieties to craft wines of remarkable precision.

    The Vineyard

The vines used for this cuvée come mainly from the estate's youngest plots, located at the heart of the Bolgheri region. The terroir enjoys a Mediterranean climate tempered by breezes from the nearby Tyrrhenian Sea. The vines grow at low altitude on gently sloping hillsides, rooted in a mosaic of well-draining soils composed of stony limestone, sand, silt and clay. The vineyard is managed according to the principles of integrated viticulture, promoting natural grass cover and organic fertilisation.

    The Vintage

2024 stands out for its early character. A mild, rainy winter allowed for an excellent start to the vine's growth cycle, supported by regular rainfall. From late June onwards, warm and sunny weather set in, encouraging optimal ripening. Véraison took place in late July under ideal conditions. In mid-August, a few localised storms brought welcome moisture ahead of the harvest, which began in September and benefited from an alternation of sunshine, coolness and light rain.

    Winemaking and Ageing

The grapes are hand-harvested in small crates before undergoing a double manual sorting and an optical sorting. After gentle pressing, each grape variety and each plot is vinified separately. Alcoholic fermentation takes place at between 22 and 26°C in stainless steel and concrete tanks over about ten days, followed by a maceration period of 10 to 15 days. Malolactic fermentation occurs partly in tanks and partly in barrels. Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia 2024 is aged for 15 months in French oak barrels (30% new and 70% one- or two-wine barrels). The blending of this Italian wine takes place after eight months, followed by a further seven months in barrel, and then six months of bottle ageing before release.
