The expression of a great Nuits-Saint-Georges terroir by Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair
The estate
Although the family's winemaking history dates back to 1720, Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair was officially founded in 2001 by Thibault Liger-Belair, its current owner and manager. Located in Burgundy, the estate farms a vineyard of approximately seven to eight hectares in the Côte de Nuits, complemented by parcels in Beaujolais. A pioneer in its region, the domaine stands out for its strong commitment to the environment, with organic certification obtained as early as 2005 and the application of biodynamic practices. It is renowned for its meticulous reading of terroirs and its minimally interventionist winemaking.
The vineyard
The cuvée comes from a small 0.4-hectare parcel planted in 1962, ideally situated in the north of the Nuits-Saint-Georges appellation, on the edge of the Premier Cru vineyards. This singular terroir is characterised by a two-tiered soil, made up of a surface layer of clay resting on a limestone bedrock. The deeply rooted vines are cultivated according to the principles of organic farming and biodynamics. The soils are worked with particular care, including the use of horses for ploughing in order to preserve the structure of the earth and promote biodiversity.
Vinification and ageing
The grapes used for the Nuits-Saint-Georges Village "La Charmotte" 2023 are hand-harvested and undergo rigorous sorting. The vinification includes 40% whole bunches and takes place over a period of three weeks with a particularly gentle extraction to preserve the finesse of the fruit. The wine is then aged for 18 months in oak barrels, with a measured proportion of 30% new oak, refining the structure without masking the identity of the terroir.
