    Decanter

The yield in Bouchard’s Chevalier-Montrachet vineyard was among those most severely impacted by frost and rain in 2021—the house produced only four barrels from 3.5 hectares. If you see a bottle of this wine, seize the day—it is absolutely superb. The initial attack features a piercingly concentrated lemony fruit with notes of white flowers, coconut, and exotic spices. There is incredible concentration here—the wine seemed ‘polished like a diamond’ in the notes I took. Doubtless, it will continue to improve for decades.

The 2021 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru has a well-defined bouquet, precise and mineral-driven, just what you expect from this noble vineyard. The palate is fresh and vibrant with touches of lemon zest and lime, razor-sharp acidity and an energetic, almost flinty finish that borders on shrillness but thankfully stops short. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

    Description

An aromatic and refined Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru white wine

    The estate

Founded in 1731 in Beaune, Bouchard Père & Fils is one of the oldest wine houses in Burgundy. For nearly three centuries, 9 generations have taken over, one after the other, with the same ambition: to create an exceptional estate in Burgundy.

Gradually built up over the years, the vineyards of the Bouchard Père et Fils estate now cover 130 hectares of vines. Combining prestigious appellations with exceptional plots, the Bouchard Père & Fils vineyard constitutes a unique wine heritage in Burgundy.

    The vineyard

This Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru Domaine 2021 from Bouchard Père & Fils stems from a vineyard of 2.33 hectares, facing east/south-east on pebbly soils made up of marls and limestone.

According to legend, the Seigneur de (lord of) Montrachet shared all his lands with his two sons. One of the sons became a Chevalier (knight) during the Crusades. The other was illegitimate, from which the Bâtard-Montrachet vineyard’s was taken.

Following numerous acquisitions of plots of land throughout the 19th century, the Bouchard family became the main owners of Chevalier-Montrachet, but above all became the only estate with plots of land on the four terraces that make up this singular appellation with its mosaic of terroirs.

    Winemaking and ageing

Harvested by hand, the grapes are meticulously sorted before vinification. The pressing is carried out in two stages, with first of all an evacuation of the first juices and then a cyclic pressing of 2 hours depending on the vintage. Aged for 10 to 12 months in French oak barrels (up to 15% new barrels depending on the vintage) in the Bastions cellars of the old Château de Beaune.

    Blend

    Chardonnay (100%).
