    Description

Tasting characteristics and advice for the Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2008 from Champy

    Tasting

    Color

The wine displays an intense ruby-red hue with cherry highlights.

    Nose

The nose reveals beautiful aromatic complexity, with notes of black fruit (blackcurrant, blueberry) and red fruit (raspberry, redcurrant). Floral nuances of violet and rose are joined by delicate spicy touches and subtle woody notes.

    Palate

On the palate, this grand cru stands out for its powerful yet refined attack. The voluptuous structure reveals a remarkable concentration of black fruit, notably blackcurrant and black cherry, supported by notes of earth, licorice, and subtle oak. The tannins—both firm and silky—lend a rich, elegant texture. The finish lingers at length, with fine mineral precision and spicy accents.

    Food and wine pairings

This Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2008 pairs perfectly with game meats such as venison or wild boar in sauce. It also accompanies, with elegance, aged beef or lamb preparations, duck, or pheasant. Cheese lovers can enjoy it with Époisses, Langres, or well-aged Comté. Dishes with wild mushrooms, notably porcini or morels, also make a harmonious match.

    Serving and cellaring

This Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2008 can be enjoyed through around 2033. It is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 15 and 17°C.

A Burgundy grand cru marked by power and elegance

    The estate

Founded in 1720 by Edme Champy, Champy is Burgundy’s oldest wine merchant house. Based in Beaune, it distinguished itself in the 19th century through its collaboration with Louis Pasteur in the development of modern oenology. Now owned by the Advini group since 2016, the House is led by Dimitri Bazas, who upholds the excellence of this historic institution. The estate farms around 21 hectares of vines under certified organic and biodynamic agriculture since 2010, spread across the Côte de Beaune and the Côte de Nuits.

    The vineyard

The Charmes-Chambertin comes from Gevrey-Chambertin’s largest grand cru climat, on the Côte de Nuits. This exceptional terroir benefits from an ideal south-east exposure. The shallow limestone soils, mixed with marl and rocks, rest on geological strata dating back to the Jurassic. This mineral composition gives the wines a distinctive tension and remarkable aromatic complexity. The vines are tended using respectful practices that allow the full typicity of this prestigious terroir to be expressed.

    The vintage

The 2008 vintage in Burgundy featured particular climatic conditions, with a cooler growing season requiring precise vineyard management. Despite these challenges, the well-exposed limestone terroirs of Charmes-Chambertin made it possible to reach satisfactory phenolic ripeness. Harvesting took place within a relatively narrow time window, producing structured wines with fine concentration and remarkable aging potential.

    Winemaking and aging

The grapes for the Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2008 are harvested by hand and transported in ventilated crates to preserve their integrity. After rigorous sorting, the berries undergo a pre-fermentation cold soak, followed by fermentation with native yeasts in open wooden vats. Total maceration lasts two to three weeks, with regular pump-overs and punch-downs. Aging takes place in French oak barrels for sixteen to twenty months, allowing the wine to develop complexity while preserving the expression of the terroir.
