    Robert Parker Wine Advocate

    Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Like many of its peers, the 2002 is in a dormant, muted state, but attractive notes of cassis, cherries, pain grille are discernable in this medium-bodied, elegant, traditionally-styled Bordeaux. It will handsomely repay 2-3 years of cellaring, and keep through the following decade.

This shows good blackberry, spice and licorice character on the nose. Medium-bodied, with good tannins and a fresh finish. Lively wine. Best after 2007.

A big, generous wine, with sweet black fruit flavors that show well with the acidity and the fresh, open tannins. For a wine from 2002, this has richness and good ripe flavors. There is depth as well as power, and this can certainly be counted one of the success stories of 2002.

Medium-dark ruby, subtly lighter at the rim. Peppery cherry bouquet, floral Cabernet notes, layered and aromatic, with a discreet aeration note. An elongated palate, supported by an intense tannin-and-acidity framework, still a touch firm in the extract, hints of wild berries, leaning more toward red berries, finishing with fine tobacco notes. Not fully convincing at the moment despite good potential.

03: Medium-dark ruby, subtly lighter at the rim. Peppery cherry bouquet with floral Cabernet notes, multilayered and aromatic, with a discreet airy note. The palate is drawn out, supported by an intense tannin-and-acid profile; the extract is still a bit firm, with hints of forest berries, finishing again more on red berries with fine tobacco notes. Not fully convincing at the moment, despite good potential. (17/20). 12: Dark ruby with a garnet sheen. The nose suggests a floral Cabernet: dark roses, red plum skins. Quite full and pleasant on the palate, with a certain underlying backbone. Very good value and a solid business-lunch choice.

Lovely color. A lovely nose, fruity and fresh, with animal notes, pure, a little austere. I was expecting a bit more richness on the palate. The wine is fruity, still fresh, with a medium body. Well-structured tannins. Medium length.

Characteristics and Tasting Notes for Château Poujeaux 2002

    Tasting

    Colour
The colour reveals a deep, dark garnet hue, adorned with violet highlights in its youth, which gently evolves toward subtle tawny nuances over time.

    Nose
Intensely perfumed and remarkably complex, the bouquet first reveals aromas of black fruits such as blackcurrant, mingled with delicate touches of violet. With aeration, it opens onto captivating tertiary notes evoking blond tobacco, old leather, truffle, liquorice and a mineral hint of flint.

    Palate
The attack is smooth and seductive, introducing a texture that is both dense and elegant. The tannins, though firm, offer a velvety touch. A fine mineral backbone supports the whole through to a remarkably persistent finish, marked by fruity and toasted returns.

    Food and wine pairing

This gastronomic red wine pairs wonderfully with grilled red meats, such as a herb-crusted rib of beef, or slow-cooked dishes like a beef bourguignon. It also enhances game, such as a venison steak, sautéed wild mushrooms, as well as long-aged hard cheeses like an extra-mature mimolette.

    Serving and cellaring

To fully appreciate all the complexity of this Château Poujeaux 2002, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 16 and 18 °C, ideally after decanting. Designed to age well, this vintage has reached a superb peak of maturity and should be enjoyed until around 2012.

The structure and balance of a Moulis-en-Médoc wine

    The estate

Although the origins of its land date back to the Middle Ages, the estate was established under its current name in 1806. Located in France, in the Bordeaux region, this emblematic property spans 70 hectares. Now run by the Philippe Cuvelier family, who acquired the estate in 2008, Château Poujeaux enjoys an unrivalled reputation. Classified as a Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel, it stands out for its ability to produce wines combining power and finesse, offering a quality worthy of the greatest Médoc crus while preserving a family spirit.

    The vineyard

Located on the famous Grand Poujeaux gravel rise, at the heart of the Moulis appellation, the vineyard rests on deep Garonne gravel soils overlying a clay-limestone subsoil. This exceptional, single-block terroir benefits from excellent natural drainage. The vines, planted at a high density of 10,000 vines per hectare, are carefully tended and hand-harvested to ensure optimal concentration and ripeness of the grapes.

    The vintage

Considered a generally fairly good year in the Bordeaux region, this season gave rise to a wine of traditional, classic style. Although sometimes seen as an intermediate vintage for the estate, it developed a fine tannic structure and undeniable elegance, confirming the consistency and expertise of the property even in less spectacular years.

    Winemaking and ageing

The making of this Château Poujeaux 2002 relies on precise plot-by-plot vinification, carried out in temperature-controlled stainless steel and concrete vats to perfectly control extraction. The wine is then matured carefully for around 18 months in French oak barrels, half of which are new, allowing its structure to be refined and its aromatic palette enriched.

    Grape varieties

This wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (50%), Merlot (40%), Petit Verdot (5%) and Cabernet Franc (5%).
