    Vinum

Very expansive nose, complex, cassis, blackberries, exotic spices, herbs, very deep. On the palate, balanced, with opulence, perfectly integrated barrique spice and plenty of structure; the elements are harmonious, and the wine has a very long finish. Very high quality.

A sensational effort, Tertre Roteboeuf’s 2005, along with the 2000, is one of the most profound wines made by Francois Mitjavile. A dense ruby/purple color is followed by a stunning perfume of sweet black currants, jammy cherries, licorice, and spice. Full-bodied and opulent with high, but remarkably sweet, velvety tannins as well as a stunning texture and a finish that lasts nearly a minute, this prodigious St.-Emilion should be drinkable in 3-4 years, and last for two decades or more. Kudos to the proprietor.

Good deep medium ruby. Wonderfully perfumed, fresh aromas of blackberry, raspberry, licorice, spices and violet pastille. Brilliantly pure and energetic, with outstanding flavor intensity and inner-mouth perfume. Still an infant today, with primary black fruits dominating. But this has the spicy, floral perfume of the greatest vintages of this wine. The ripely tannic, palate-saturating finish is wonderfully long and vibrant. "Our most beautiful vintage since 1990," notes Mitjavile.

With its earthy, black raspberry, caramel core, fresh black raspberry liqueur, and a finish of truffle, smoke, and herbs, this full-bodied, concentrated, ripe, plush, sensuous, opulently textured wine is already beginning to show well. If you’re lucky enough to have a few bottles in your cellar, another 2–4 years of rest will add a lot more complexity to the wine.

The 2005 Château Tertre Roteboeuf is the usual blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc that was raised in new barrels. It's deep ruby-hued, with an incredible perfume and black raspberries, currants, smoked tobacco, spicy herbs, cedar, and smoked earth. This powerful, full-bodied, deep, layered, incredibly textured Saint-Emilion is just now at the early stage of its prime drinking window and has another two decades.

Extremely deep purple. Expansive dried-fruit bouquet, chopped figs, raisins, freshly ground cocoa beans, also showing delicate, rich chocolate notes, a touch of Colheita Port, freshly roasted Arabica coffee. On the palate, an essence of very ripe Merlot with plenty of spice, a Madeira-like shimmer with yellow curry, again showing pronounced raisin tones, an sensual finish. Not a typical Saint-Émilion, but a typical Tertre-Rôteboeuf.

06: The malolactic fermentation was not yet finished by the end of March. Therefore very hard to assess. Very dark garnet, deep at the core. Intense bouquet, gently dry, lots of mocha tones, plums and licorice, dried figs and currant nuances. Rich, smooth palate, again plenty of ripe plums, tea nuances; despite the high alcohol (around 15%), the wine feels lively, racy, and shows great length ending with malt and chocolate notes. Belongs among the great wines of this estate. Can still improve. (18/20). 07: Extremely deep purple. Expansive dried-fruit bouquet, chopped figs, raisins, freshly ground cocoa beans, also showing delicate, rich chocolate notes, a hint of Colheita Port, freshly roasted Arabica coffee. On the palate, an essence of very ripe Merlot with plenty of spice, Madeira shimmer with yellow curry, again pronounced raisin notes, erotic finish. Not a typical St. Emilion but a typical Tertre-Rôteboeuf.

An outstanding Saint-Émilion in a rich, complex style

    The Estate

Located in Saint-Laurent-des-Combes within the Saint-Émilion appellation, Château Tertre Roteboeuf spans 6 hectares of vineyards on clay-limestone hillsides facing south/southeast. Taken over in the late 1970s by François Mitjavile, who now runs the estate with his wife Émilie, the property produces around 27,000 bottles each year. The uniqueness of this Bordeaux wine lies in its artisanal viticulture: very low-trained vines, grass cover between the rows, late hand-harvesting, fermentation without added yeast and extended aging in new oak barrels, showcasing the most accomplished expression of Bordeaux hillside wines.

    The Vineyard

The Château Tertre Roteboeuf vineyard enjoys an exceptional setting in Saint-Émilion, in the Côtes sector. The plots are planted on an amphitheater-shaped clay-limestone terroir, with a prized south-southeast exposure that promotes optimal grape ripening. The soils, made up of four types of clay over a limestone base, give the wine its complexity and depth. The vines, over 40 years old, are managed with permanent grass cover and low pruning to concentrate aromas.

    The Vintage

The 2005 vintage is considered one of the most outstanding in the recent history of Bordeaux. Weather conditions were nearly ideal throughout the growing season, with abundant sunshine and favorable temperatures. The hot, dry summer allowed for perfect ripening, while September’s stable weather enabled late harvesting under optimal conditions. This vintage produced wines of remarkable concentration, with refined tannic structure and exceptional aging potential.

    Winemaking and Aging

The winemaking of Château Tertre Roteboeuf 2005 follows a minimalist approach focused on expressing the terroir. Harvesting is done by hand at full ripeness, often late in the season. Fermentation takes place in concrete vats at high temperature, allowing optimal extraction. Aging is carried out in new oak barrels for around twenty-two months, with frequent rackings that help integrate the components. The wine is neither filtered nor fined, preserving its authenticity and natural complexity.
