Description
Characteristics and tasting notes of Château Valandraud 2025
Tasting
Appearance
This wine reveals a particularly deep colour. In its early youth, it displays an almost opaque ruby hue with purplish reflections.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet is explosive and of remarkable purity. It exudes intense aromas of very ripe black fruits such as blackcurrant, blackberry, plum and black cherry. With aeration, indulgent notes of chocolate, mocha, espresso and liquorice, along with a subtle smoky touch, come to enrich the whole.
Palate
The attack on the palate is both ample and remarkably precise. The substance unfolds a velvety, creamy texture, supported by a dense yet perfectly silky tannic structure. Despite its opulence and concentration, the wine retains a magnificent natural freshness and beautiful energy. The finish, of impressive length, leaves a lasting imprint on notes of black fruits and cocoa.
Food and wine pairing
This great red wine calls for dishes with character and intense flavours. It will enhance fine roasted red meats, such as a grilled rib of beef or a rack of lamb in a herb crust. It also pairs wonderfully with feathered game, slow-cooked dishes in sauce, or autumnal preparations showcasing wild mushrooms and truffle.
Serving and ageing
To fully enjoy Château Valandraud 2025 in its youth, it is highly recommended to decant the wine two to three hours before serving. The ideal tasting temperature is around 15.5°C. Endowed with exceptional ageing potential, this vintage can be kept in the cellar and enjoyed until approximately 2055.
The excellence of a Premier Grand Cru Classé of Saint-Émilion
The estate
Founded in 1989 by Murielle Andraud and Jean-Luc Thunevin, Château Valandraud is an iconic estate of the Bordeaux region. Initially a pioneer of the "garage wines" movement with an initial micro-plot, the estate today covers around 9 hectares. Still run by the Thunevin family, this vineyard has experienced a meteoric rise. Its artisanal approach, focused on low yields and absolute quality, has enabled it to reach the prestigious rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé of Saint-Émilion, becoming an essential benchmark of the Right Bank.
The vineyard
Located in the commune of Saint-Étienne-de-Lisse, the vineyard flourishes on a magnificent limestone plateau rising to 85 metres in altitude above the Dordogne, within the Saint-Émilion appellation. The 9 hectares of vines, with an average age of 18 years, benefit from ideal exposures, particularly to the north, which helps preserve the freshness of the grapes. The estate places paramount importance on respect for the environment: the vines are meticulously tended, like a true garden, at the heart of carefully preserved biotopes.
The vintage
The year began with a mild winter that allowed excellent water reserves to build up in the soils, leading to an early budbreak of the vines. Spring, particularly mild, offered ideal conditions for harmonious vegetative development. The summer season then proved hot and arid, causing a slight slowdown in the cycle. Fortunately, beneficial rainfall at the end of August, combined with a drop in temperatures, revived the ripening process. Faced with this sun-drenched climate, vineyard work was meticulously adapted to protect the bunches and maintain perfect balance.
Vinification and ageing
Gentle and relatively short macerations in order to extract the quintessence and purity of the fruit. Ageing then takes place over a period of 20 months. It is carried out 90% in new barrels and 10% in large wooden casks, with an extremely rigorous selection of coopers and toast levels to guarantee absolute precision. Alcohol content: 14% vol.
Grape varieties
This wine is the result of a blend composed of 84% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Cabernet Franc.
