The expression of Syrah on the Saint-Joseph terroir by Domaine Courbis

    The estate

Located in the Rhône Valley, the estate is rooted in a family history that began in the 16th century. However, the creation of the specialised wine estate dates back to the mid-20th century. Today, brothers Laurent and Dominique Courbis run Domaine Courbis. The vineyard extends over more than 40 hectares, distinguished by its spectacular terroirs on steep slopes. The winemakers cultivate the vines there with great precision, combining tradition and modernity to reveal the full complexity of their appellations.

    The vineyard

The "Les Royes" plot, from which this wine of the Saint-Joseph appellation is produced, extends over 7.5 hectares within a picturesque valley. Located on the edge of Cornas, this terroir takes the form of a genuine amphitheatre facing due south. The vines grow on hillsides with steep slopes, benefiting from natural protection against northern winds. The soils there are exclusively of clay-limestone nature.

    Winemaking and ageing

To craft the "Les Royes" 2023 cuvée, the harvest is carried out by hand into small crates, followed by strict sorting and complete destemming. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled vats with a maceration of 25 to 30 days. After malolactic fermentation, the wine is transferred into barrels. Ageing lasts 12 months in barrels, of which 25% are new oak, complemented by barrels of one to three wines. Finally, the wine rests for 3 months in stainless steel vats before bottling.
