Description
A red Saint-Joseph from Domaine Stéphane Ogier, born on the granitic terroirs of the Northern Rhône
The estate
Domaine Stéphane Ogier was founded in 1983, when Michel Ogier released the first bottles under the family name, after several generations of grape growing in Ampuis, in the Rhône Valley. Today run by his son Stéphane Ogier, who joined the estate in 1997, the domaine farms a 45-hectare vineyard spread across Côte-Rôtie, Saint-Joseph, Condrieu and Seyssuel. Recognised as a benchmark of the Northern Rhône, Domaine Stéphane Ogier combines family heritage with parcel-by-parcel vinification, in a constant pursuit of precision and elegance.
The vineyard
This cuvée comes from Syrah plots in the Saint-Joseph appellation, on granitic terroirs located in the northern part of the appellation. These soils, typical of the right bank of the Rhône, give the grapes a distinctive tension and purity of fruit. As across the estate's entire vineyard, the grapes are harvested by hand to preserve the integrity of the bunches picked on these demanding slopes.
Vinification and ageing
As with all of the estate's red wines, the grapes for Saint-Joseph Le Passage 2023 are hand-harvested and then vinified parcel by parcel, in order to best reveal the expression of the granitic terroir from which they originate. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled tanks, followed by ageing in French oak barrels, including a measured proportion of new oak, designed to support the structure of the wine without masking the purity of the fruit.
Grape variety
Le Passage 2023 from Domaine Stéphane Ogier is made from Syrah, the emblematic grape variety of the red wines of Domaine Stéphane Ogier and of the Northern Rhône Valley.
