Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Winter Blend Reposado Fortaleza
Tasting
Nose
Bright and fruity, the bouquet opens with aromas of cooked agave and agua miel, elevated by delicate herbal and floral notes. Touches of citrus, mint, and papaya mingle joyfully with golden apple, caramel, and butter, reflecting the magic of open-air fermentation.
Palate
Remarkably rich, the texture envelops the palate with a deeply honeyed sweetness reminiscent of golden raisins and the famous "mieles dulces." The tasting unfolds into a vibrant minerality, white pepper spice, and a gentle woody warmth. The long, complex finish reveals a fine tannic structure without any dryness, crowned by an abundance of floral notes.
Pairings and Tasting Moments
To fully appreciate its nuances, this spirit is best enjoyed at room temperature in a narrow-rimmed glass, without salt or lime that would mask its subtlety. Its minerality and citrus notes beautifully enhance seafood, such as oysters or ceviche, while its honeyed, spiced sweetness pairs wonderfully with pan-seared scallops, buttered lobster, or roasted meats. For a bolder pairing, it also matches perfectly with chocolate desserts, fresh fruit, or crème brûlée.
Mixology
Although its rarity and exceptional status invite a pure, contemplative tasting experience, this spirit truly shines in sophisticated cocktails. It elevates classics such as the Margarita, the Paloma, or the Tequila Sazerac, and serves as a remarkable base for spirit-forward creations that showcase its warm spices and rich profile.
Other Characteristics
Bottled at an alcohol content ranging between 46% and 46.5% depending on the vintage, this spirit stands out for its pronounced natural minerality, a direct legacy of the valley's volcanic terroir, with no additives whatsoever.
A Tequila from the Jalisco Valley of Rare Complexity and Profound Minerality
The Legacy of Tequila Fortaleza: Craftsmanship at the Heart of Jalisco
Founded in 2005 by Guillermo Erickson Sauza, great-great-grandson of pioneer Don Cenobio Sauza, the Fortaleza brand embodies the absolute preservation of pre-industrial methods. Located in the town of Tequila, the La Fortaleza distillery exclusively produces Tequila from Jalisco using blue agave. Under the guidance of its current owner, Guillermo Erickson Sauza, the estate rejects any logic of yield in favor of exceptional flavor. The process relies on a slow 36-hour cooking in a brick oven, crushing with a volcanic stone wheel (tahona), open-air fermentation in wooden vats, and double distillation in small copper stills. This artisanal approach, upheld by a company that has remained 100% family-owned, has earned Fortaleza cult status among knowledgeable enthusiasts worldwide.
The Unique Craftsmanship of the Winter Blend Reposado Tequila
The Winter Blend Reposado is the distillery's most experimental and sought-after expression. Made from blue agave grown in the valley's volcanic soils, this annual limited edition was first launched in 2019.
Technically classified as a Reposado, this spirit pushes the boundaries of its category. The blend begins with a base of tequila blanco distilled at Still Strength, which then undergoes extended aging and meticulous finishing in carefully selected secondary casks. Depending on the year, the team uses American oak barrels that previously held beer, French oak barrels, former sherry casks, or even barrels from rare wines such as Passito di Caluso.
This production method, which blends barrel innovation with the rigor of traditional techniques, creates a deliberate tension between the classic Reposado category and a complexity worthy of the greatest aged spirits. Faced with exponentially growing global demand, the Winter Blend Reposado Tequila has become a true market phenomenon, generating anticipation so great that each annual release is awaited with the same fervor reserved for the finest vintages.
