    Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of the Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2018 by Louis Jadot

    Tasting

    Appearance
The wine reveals a deep, dark ruby hue, adorned with purple highlights in its youth.

    Nose
The bouquet unveils itself as intense and remarkably complex, opening with aromas of ripe small red and black fruits such as blackcurrant, blackberry and black cherry, underscored by floral and spicy touches. Over time, it evolves towards nuances of liquorice, undergrowth and animal notes evoking fine leather or musk.

    Palate
The attack is ample and velvety, introducing a dense and generous texture. The structure relies on firm tannins of great silky finesse. The whole retains a beautiful freshness, stretching towards a long, persistent finish marked by a noble bitterness.

    Food and wine pairings

This great red wine pairs wonderfully with characterful meats such as a roasted rib of beef, game dishes in sauce like a venison stew, or noble poultry such as duck with sweet spices. It also sublimates soft cheeses with washed rinds, in the manner of an aged Époisses.

    Serving and cellaring

To fully appreciate this Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2018, it is recommended to serve it between 16 and 18°C in large glasses, allowing for aeration in a decanter in its youth. Endowed with excellent potential, it can be cellared to evolve favourably until around 2038.

The richness and complexity of a Gevrey-Chambertin Grand Cru by Louis Jadot

    The estate

Founded in 1859 in the heart of Beaune, Maison Louis Jadot is an emblematic figure of Burgundy. Both an estate and a négociant house, it oversees a vast vineyard of approximately 125 to 130 hectares spread across the region's finest appellations. Now owned by the Kopf family and managed by the Gagey family, the house distinguishes itself through its deep attachment to the authentic expression of terroirs and its commitment to sustainable viticulture, producing wines of great consistency and international renown.

    The vineyard

The Climat of Charmes-Chambertin is located in the Côte de Nuits, in the commune of Gevrey-Chambertin. Resting on the mid-slope, at an altitude between 260 and 280 metres, this exceptional terroir enjoys an ideal exposure to the east and south-east. The vines flourish on well-drained soils, composed of marls and limestones mixed with clays, with a surface scattered with small stones. Vineyard management favours controlled yields and high planting densities to encourage the natural concentration of the grapes.

    The vintage

The year 2018 stood out in Burgundy for its particularly warm and sunny weather. Following a long growing season, the mild summer offered ideal conditions for the ripening of the berries. Moderate rainfall helped maintain excellent sanitary conditions in the vines. These high summer temperatures led to optimal phenolic maturity, requiring early harvests to preserve the balance and freshness of the fruit.

    Winemaking and aging

After manual harvesting and rigorous sorting, the vinification of this Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2018 takes place in vats with controlled temperatures. Extractions are carried out gently through measured punch-downs and pump-overs to preserve the finesse of the aromas. The wine then benefits from an extended aging of 15 to 18 months in oak barrels, produced by the house's own cooperage, with a carefully measured proportion of new wood to structure the material without masking the identity of the terroir.
