    Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of the Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Les Pucelles" 2023 by Louis Jadot

    Tasting

    Appearance

The wine reveals a bright, pale straw-yellow hue, reflecting the freshness of this white wine.

    Nose

The aromatic bouquet opens with fresh fruit aromas such as white peach and citrus. With aeration, delicate spicy touches and subtle toasted notes come to the fore.

    Palate

The palate offers a texture that is both creamy and refined, underpinned by pronounced minerality. A saline edge and flinty notes bring beautiful tension. The long, persistent finish evolves toward flavours of hazelnut and white flowers, all carried by a perfectly integrated acidity.

    Food and wine pairings

This wine pairs ideally with seafood such as scallops, oysters or lobster in a cream sauce. It also accompanies poached or grilled white fish beautifully, along with dishes featuring umami flavours such as a seafood bisque or a mushroom sauce, as well as aged hard cheeses like Comté.

    Serving and cellaring

The Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Les Pucelles" 2023 can be enjoyed in its youth over the next two to three years, but its structure allows it to evolve favourably in the cellar until 2035, or even around 2040 for bottles kept in optimal conditions.

The mineral expression of a white Premier Cru from Burgundy

    The estate

Founded in 1859 by Louis Henry Denis Jadot, Maison Louis Jadot is an emblematic institution located in France, in the heart of Burgundy. Historically rooted in the region since the acquisition of its first vines in 1827, the estate stands out for its dual status as both grower and négociant. Now led by Thomas Seiter, who took over the presidency in 2023, the house perpetuates a low-intervention philosophy. It combines respect for historical traditions with an adaptation to contemporary challenges, notably through a transition toward sustainable and organic viticultural practices.

    The vineyard

The Les Pucelles climat extends over just more than six hectares within the Puligny-Montrachet appellation. The vines benefit from an easterly exposure, offering optimal sunshine while protecting the grapes from excessive afternoon heat. The terroir is characterised by shallow, clay-limestone soils rich in gravel, resting directly on a limestone bedrock. The estate also obtained organic farming certification for these parcels in 2024.

    The vintage

The 2023 vintage stands out for its warm weather conditions, which favoured a generous ripening of the grapes. The health of the vines proved excellent, allowing treatments to be stopped as early as the end of June. This mild climate delivered an abundant and healthy harvest, marked by particularly low malic acidity due to the summer heat.

    Winemaking and ageing

The grapes destined for the Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Les Pucelles" 2023 are hand-harvested and then rigorously sorted. Juice extraction is carried out gently through pneumatic pressing. Fermentation takes place naturally, without artificial temperature control, in French oak barrels using indigenous yeasts. Malolactic fermentation is either partial or avoided depending on the characteristics of the year. Finally, the wine is aged on fine lees for around fifteen months in barrels, one-third of which are new oak.

    Grape variety

    100% Chardonnay.
