Description
Characteristics and tasting notes of the Volnay 1er Cru "Clos de la Barre" Monopole 2018 from Louis Jadot
Tasting
Appearance
The wine reveals a ruby hue of beautiful intensity, clear and bright, potentially developing subtle garnet reflections over time.
Nose
Rich and complex, the bouquet exudes aromas of small red and black fruits, blended with floral notes of violet and delicate hints of vanilla. With aeration, it opens up to nuances of sweet spices and undergrowth.
Palate
The palate stands out for its roundness and silky texture. Carried by fine, well-integrated tannins, it offers a masterfully controlled balance thanks to a preserved freshness, extending towards a lingering finish with fruity and floral accents.
Food and wine pairings
This red wine pairs harmoniously with roast poultry, duck breast with red fruits, delicate white meats, or a mushroom risotto. As for cheeses, it will ideally accompany a Saint-Nectaire or a lightly aged Brie.
Serving and cellaring
Endowed with solid ageing potential, this Volnay 1er Cru "Clos de la Barre" Monopole 2018 can be enjoyed in its early years but will continue to evolve favourably in the cellar and can be savoured until around 2033.
The authentic expression of an emblematic Volnay terroir
The estate
Founded in 1859 by Louis Henry Denis Jadot, the Maison Louis Jadot is a historic institution located in the heart of Beaune, in Burgundy. Now owned by the American Kopf family, it is led by Thomas Seiter, president, and Thibault Gagey, managing director. Renowned for its rigorous plot-by-plot approach and the enhancement of its terroirs, the estate stands out for its environmental commitments, including High Environmental Value certifications. It offers a faithful representation of the Burgundian viticultural mosaic.
The vineyard
Farmed as a monopole, the "Clos de la Barre" climat is a Premier Cru enclosed by walls, located in the immediate vicinity of the village of Volnay. Resting on well-draining clay-limestone soils, this terroir benefits from a favourable exposure and a balanced microclimate. The vines receive careful manual attention and sustainable viticulture practices, encouraging even ripening of the grapes while preserving biodiversity.
The vintage
The year 2018 stands among the warm vintages in Burgundy. The growing cycle was marked by periods of intense summer heat, counterbalanced by cool nights. This thermal alternation allowed the berries to reach full maturity while retaining the acidity necessary for balance.
Winemaking and ageing
To craft this Volnay 1er Cru "Clos de la Barre" Monopole 2018, the grapes are mostly destemmed before fermentation in vats. Measured punch-downs and pump-overs ensure a gentle extraction. The wine is then transferred to French oak barrels for ageing over twelve to eighteen months, with a proportion of new wood adjusted to respect the identity of the terroir.
