Description
Characteristics and Tasting Notes of Louis Jadot's Volnay 1er Cru "Santenots" 2018
Tasting
Appearance
This red wine displays a beautiful ruby to deep ruby hue, reflecting optimal maturity.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet reveals itself as complex and intense. It unfolds fragrances of ripe small black and red fruits, such as blackberry, cherry and raspberry, harmoniously intertwined with floral notes of violet. Subtle touches of rich earth, sweet spices, smoke and delicately toasted oak round out this highly expressive nose.
Palate
On the palate, the wine offers a generous texture and a structure ranging from medium to full-bodied. The attack is lively and dynamic, revealing a broad fruity core. The whole is perfectly supported by chalky, elegant tannins, leading to a lingering and balanced finish.
Food and wine pairing
This cuvée pairs wonderfully with grilled or roasted red meats, as well as characterful poultry such as duck breast or capon. It will also enhance traditional dishes such as coq au vin, a light stew or feathered game, not forgetting soft-ripened cheeses.
Serving and cellaring
The Volnay 1er Cru "Santenots" 2018 possesses a beautiful structure granting it excellent ageing potential. While it can be enjoyed in its youth for its generous fruit, it will evolve very favourably and can be savoured until around 2033.
The Elegance and Depth of a Great Volnay Wine
The estate
Officially founded in 1859 in Beaune, the Louis Jadot House is an essential institution in Burgundy. Historically connected to viticulture since 1826, it now owns a vast vineyard extending across the region's finest appellations. Currently led by Thibault Gagey, under the aegis of the importer Kobrand, the estate stands out for its commitment to organic farming. With the expertise of technical director Frédéric Barnier, Louis Jadot produces authentic wines that combine tradition and environmental modernity.
The vineyard
The "Santenots" climat has the geographical particularity of being located in the commune of Meursault, while producing red wines under the Volnay appellation. The plot cultivated by the estate lies in the lower part of this vast premier cru, on deep soils with clay-limestone nuances. Formerly part of the Prieur-Brunet estate and integrated in 2017, these vines benefit from environmentally respectful management, marked by the abandonment of herbicides and a transition to organic practices in order to preserve soil vitality.
The vintage
The year 2018 was characterised by particularly warm weather conditions. This mild climate favoured excellent grape ripeness, requiring special attention during the growing cycle and harvest to maintain optimal balance and preserve the freshness of the berries.
Winemaking and ageing
The crafting of the Volnay 1er Cru "Santenots" 2018 rests on a classical and measured oenological approach. After fermentation in vats with gentle macerations to extract colour and aromas without excess, the wine benefits from a careful ageing in French oak barrels. A significant proportion of new wood is used, bringing toasted notes while respecting the identity of the terroir.
Grape variety
100% Pinot Noir
