Cask sample. Open and a touch herbal. Red fruit as well. Lighter fruit on the mid palate. Slightly dusty, chalky finish. Pretty much ready to go. (JL)

Ripe red fruits blend their rich aromas with the fresher notes of small black berries (blackcurrant, cherry) in a warm, finely spiced bouquet. Focused on freshness, the palate evokes cool summer evenings, stone holding the day's warmth, the garrigue and its mouthwatering herbal notes. The tannins caress the palate before a tense finish with lovely mouthwatering bitters and a hint of licorice.

The 2023 Saint-Joseph Le Grand Pompée casts its early aromas toward a medium lift of black fruits, spicy tones and restrained smoky aromas. Touching the medium-bodied palate with acceptable flavour concentration wrapped around smooth tannins, the 2023 can be enjoyed right out of the gate.

    Description

The elegance and complexity of a Saint-Joseph red wine

    The estate

An iconic house behind the great wines of the Northern Rhône Valley, Paul Jaboulet-Aîné was founded in 1834 in Tain l’Hermitage. Since 2006, this prestigious estate—owned by the Frey family—has been led by renowned oenologist and winemaker Caroline Frey. She oversees a 125-hectare vineyard spread across outstanding appellations such as Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, Hermitage, Cornas, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu as well as Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise.

    The vineyard

Le Grand Pompée from Paul Jaboulet-Aîné is a wine from the Saint-Joseph appellation, located on the right bank of the Rhône, in the heart of the Northern Rhône Valley. The vines, aged 10 to 30 years, are rooted on steep south/southeast-facing slopes, in light schist and gneiss soils over a granite bedrock.

    The wine

The name of this Rhône Valley cuvée pays tribute to Grand Pompée, who fought alongside Charlemagne against the Moors on the right bank of the Rhône in the 9th century. Victor Hugo echoes this in his collection “La Légende des siècles,” with this famous line: « And some of this wine that the Grand Pompée loved ».

    Grape variety

Le Grand Pompée 2023 from Paul Jaboulet-Aîné is 100% Syrah.
