The elegance of a pure Pinot Noir from Vertus by Veuve Fourny & Fils
The estate
Founded in 1856, the Veuve Fourny & Fils brand is a family-run Champagne estate located in Vertus. Now run by its current owners, brothers Charles-Henry and Emmanuel Fourny, the estate spans around nine hectares. Recognised for its artisanal approach and its status as a grower-negociant, it upholds environmentally responsible practices, certified Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE) level 3 since 2020. The estate stands out for its rare ability to grow both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir on Premier Cru-classified terroirs, yielding wines of remarkable purity.
The vineyard
This cuvée is crafted from historic Pinot Noir plots located on the Vertus Premier Cru terroir. The vines, over forty years old and grown from massal selection, flourish across two specific lieux-dits: "Les Rougemonts", a very steep slope (47%) facing east with fine red clay over chalk, and "Les Gilottes", facing east/south with rendzina soils over chalk. This Champagne estate practises sustainable viticulture, using no copper or insecticides, favouring organic fertilisers and compost, and alternating between ploughing and grass cover to preserve biodiversity.
Winemaking and ageing
The non-vintage Rosé de Saignée Extra-Brut Premier Cru is crafted using the saignée method, which involves a short maceration of the must with the grape skins. Only first-press juices are used. Vinification takes place entirely in tanks, with no filtration. It is aged for seven months on lees before bottling. It then undergoes extended ageing of four to five years on staves in the estate's historic cellars, at a low and constant temperature. Although this is a non-vintage cuvée, this bottle is made from a single, unique harvest year. This wine stands out for its very low dosage of 3 g/L (Extra-Brut), made from grape sugar syrup. The closure is also guaranteed free from any cork taint.
Grape variety
This Extra-Brut is 100% Pinot Noir
