An Opulent "Wine of the World" Cabernet Sauvignon by Penfolds

The Producer
Established in 1844 by Christopher Rawson Penfold and his wife Mary, the Penfolds estate has become a leading wine producer in Australia, with a great international reputation for its powerful red wines. The estate today produces a range of multi-vineyard and multi-region blends, as well as single-varietal wines aged in American or French oak.

The California Collection
The Penfolds "California Collection" is a project 20 years in the making, harking back to the time when Penfolds winemakers first imported heritage vine cuttings from South Australia to plant in the sunny vineyards of California. The four wines comprising this collection are true "citizens of the world," unrestricted by geographical borders and representing the concept of multiregional winemaking. Based on fruit from Napa Valley grown on originally Australian vine cuttings, some of these wines also include fruit from Australia.

The Wine
The Penfolds Bin 149 Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 is the debut vintage of a wine that includes fruit from both Napa Valley and South Australia in its blend. This single-varietal Cabernet Sauvignon "Wine of the World" expresses the excellence of the northern hemisphere, complemented by flagship-worthy fruit from Down Under. In fact the name "Bin 149" is derived from the percentage of South Australian fruit included in the blend.

Vinification and Ageing
This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon wine contains a blend of fruit from vineyards in Napa Valley and South Australia. The wine is aged for 16 months in French oak (80% new) and American oak (20% new).

The Penfolds Bin 149 Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 displays in the glass a bright, deep red colour.

On the nose: The bouquet of this Penfolds "Wine of the World" reveals rich red fruit, along with nuances of iced tea, caperberries, mocha and kirsch. Some heady barrel ferment characters lend a certain opulence and depth to its profile.

On the palate: This Penfolds Bin 149 Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 reveals a classic Penfold style in its character, yet offers its own unique structure. The palate is structured by very fine and close-knit tannins, with flavours of menthol, cedar, roasted meats and sandalwood pouring forth. This red wine is characterised by a bright acidity and great energy, trailing off on a very long, persistent finish.
